Subject Author Date Yes, there have been five: Tara Dawn Holland, Carolyn Sapp, Leannza Coronet, Debbye Turner, and Elizabeth Ward. When looking up this information, I also discovered that Margaret Marie O'Brien, who was Miss Massachusetts the year Sharlene Wells won, also was the Sweetheart winner. I'm sure she thought that she had won Miss America the following year after the runners-up had been called out, and would also explain the rather shocked look she had on her face when Sharlene was announced as the winner. I, too, distinctly remembering that I thought O'Brien had won after the runners-up at been announced. Sharlene, of course, was the safe pick after Vanessa's year. Guylyn had won the Sweeheart competition the year before, and like Margaret O'Brien was also a talent winner the year she competed at Miss America. Having won no preliminary awards, I don't think Kylene was on anyone's radar. He raised some bogus issues about the local she competed in (no fault of hers) and pretty well was made ineligible. Miss Kansas that year, returned home and blasted the pageant for questionable judging. I might be one of the few saying this, but I would never have voted for Barker as my choice for Miss America. I will say that when she returned to crown Prewitt, she was far and away the most telegenic person who ever walked the runway. However, my real point of my post is that I will never understand people who put down Kylene Barker. In terms of being drop dead gorgeous, she was one of our most beautiful Miss Americas ever, not to mention having the figure to go with it. Granted the talent did not compare to the opera singers and pianists that year, but between her looks and her apparently strong interview, she was the best choice. However, I don't think anyone can deny that she ended up being a great choice. I think the issue at the time of her selection was that it was such a surprise. I mean when was the last time a gymnast had won the title. Judi Ford comes to mine, but I believe she's the only other one. As stated, Kylene also won no preliminaries, and back in the 70's and 80's with the exception of Tawny Godin and Rebecca King, every winner won a talent or swimsuit preliminary or both. Kylene definitely fit the bill of "the girl next door," but she had two strikes against her -- being a gymnast and winning no preliminaries, so it didn't fit the norm of what kind of winner was being chosen at that time. I still think AI may have been invented years upon years ago in TV and Film. (That's a joke, so simmer down). But it looked fake. It was so GOOD it looked fake. I don't think a special effects person could have placed all the glittering sequins correctly or had the light hit so perfectly. It was other worldly. I'm from Virginia and I didn't think she was going to win, and I think they could have picked a few different girls that were standing there. But the next year? I said holy cow they got it right. Where was THIS girl LAST year? Well she was there, just not everyone "saw" her. Just out of curiosity, at the end when Prewitt is announced as winner, there are two non finalists in the back that seem very pleased that MS won. They grabbed each other's hands and were cheering. Does anyone have any idea which states they were? One is wearing a blue/black dress and the other is a solid black gown. In the final shot of the Top 5, they are right behind them on the right hand side of the screen. Thank you. It was odd that most of the contestants wore their evening gown also in the opening number. I believe it was either Tami Sanders, Miss Oregon, or Carla Singer, Miss Wyoming and Rhonda Rushlow, Miss RI. I could be wrong, though.
