Ilocos Sur invents the ‘beach cleaner’
Manila Bulletin

Vigan City, Ilocos Sur — When sun-bathing or on a picnic on the beaches of Ilocos Sur, don’t be surprised to see a tractor driving by.

It is the newest local invention contracted by the provincial government – a “beach cleaner.”

BEACH ‘BUDDY’ — The ‘beach cleaner,’ a local invention, demonstrates its ability to sweep trash away from the sandy waterfront in Ilocos Sur as Governor Ryan Singson (right) and other government officials observe its test-run, earlier this week in Candon City. (Mar T. Supnad)

The beach cleaner is a tractor-drawn device that can easily pick up litter and objects scattered on the sandy waterfront areas of the province.

Its builder, Thai national Teerapun Punpinij alias “Jimmy,” said the idea and design actually came from Governor Ryan Singson, who was obsessed with coming up with a modern solution maintaining the cleanliness of Ilocos Sur’s beaches.

“After Gov. Ryan shared me his idea, I immediately came up with a scheme and, through the assistance of a local machine shop in Bantay town, assembled what we now call the beach cleaner,” he said.

“It’s effective and the governor is pleased with it after our test-run along the coastal areas in Darapidad, Candon City and in Sta. Maria town,” said Punpinij, a long-time consultant of the provincial government since the time Singson’s father, “Chavit,” was governor.

The governor has already recommended the use of the beach cleaner in the so-called “Boracay of the North” in Cabugao town and several other beautiful beach resorts such as Santiago Cove, also boasting of its white sandy beaches.
