FRAMINGHAM – Herb Chasan has won awards before, and the one he is set to receive on Friday is no different. For Chasan, the trophies aren’t personal accolades, but springboards toward something bigger.

On Friday, the Massachusetts Association of School Committees will award Chasan, Framingham's Hoops and Homework founder, the Community Leader for Public Education Award. The recognition, Chasan said, won’t go on a shelf. Instead, he will put it to work.

School Committee chairwoman Beverly Hugo said Chasan was chosen for the award for his “profound effect” on the community through both his advocacy for school funding and his after school program for at-risk kids. Chasan, Hugo said, works in kids' communities on Beaver and Waverly streets, giving them opportunities they may not have had without his program.

“He works with a population of families of low socio-economic needs who continue to be underrepresented in town meeting and in society,” Hugo said. “He tries to be their voice. He tries to be the voice of their children.”

Chasan isn't thinking about what the award means to him personally, he's thinking about how it helps the program.

“It’s going to help with sustainability of the program,” Chasan said. “I’m focused on making this thing run for the foreseeable future, and this should help.”

In September, Chasan won the Framingham Youth Football Heroes Among Us award. Coupled with the one he will get Friday, Chasan said the accolades will lend him credibility when looking for sponsors, grants and partners for the program.

Chasan said he sees the award as a jumping point to the future. He hopes to get a full basketball court at one of the Hoops and Homework sites; currently there is only one hoop at one of the two locations. Along with the hoops, Chasan said he also plans to bolster the homework side of the operation.

Currently, Chasan said he’s heard feedback from school administrators that the program is improving academics for the 60 kids who attend the program. Chasan said he hopes he can get more information on how the children are performing in school. With that information, he hopes to find their weak spots and give them directed studies to bring them up to speed.

Oh really? A recent post to the listserve FRAMGOV had a complaint against Mr Chassan. Interesting how this award goes after that complaint.
