No one ever holds the title all year, I can't remember anyone ever holding it for a full year maybe Salem and Cape May other then that has anyone ever held it all year, unless they were ageing out?

Commitments for Service as a State or Local Titleholder
Full-time Service as a Titleholder. If I am selected as the Titleholder at the Competition, I will serve as the Titleholder during the Year of Service and until my successor is selected or appointed. The duties and obligations of my service as the Titleholder have been described to me and I understand and accept them. I agree that I will dedicate my entire time, efforts, and energy during my Year of Service to the fulfillment of these duties and obligations, and that I will engage in no other business or other activities that will in any way interfere with the duties and obligations of my Year of Service.

Did anyone put any thought? In deciding a restaurant. Aren't they reading the teens platforms?
A teen contestant has Severe food allergies. So why is the after party at a Seafood restaurant?

I don’t care one way or another about the move but it kills me to already see some of the spineless kiss ass contestants posting on social media how happy they are about the change . These are not the woman we need as leaders moving forward . They are cowards that would sell their souls for a title . They are trying to score points with the new ED and potential judges.

SICKENING!!!

It's funny you call it a sisterhood, but in fact your not in that sisterhood until you win a crown, but then the following year you don't get called to help with anything unless you do have that crown, so what is it really a 1 year sisterhood? Why can't you do things without the crown who really cares if you have it or not, I have it but when I didn't I was never asked to held with anything until I got my crown, what kind of sisterhood is that?

PETITION UPDATE
Gretchen Carlson hit with lawsuit over ‘bad faith’ takeover MAO STAKEHOLDERS
December 20, 2018 — PRESS RELEASE
(For more PR information contact:John Healy, healyj814@gmail.com)

Miss America Executives, Board of Trustees Sued by State Licensees For Illegal Acts in Governing the Nearly 100-year-old Institution Additional details including evidence and witness statements expected in January December 19, 2018 – Atlantic City, NJ –

A former Board member of the Miss America Organization (MAO), as well as four Miss America state licensees, filed suit today in Atlantic County Superior Court, alleging that Miss America Organization (MAO) executives acted illegally by ignoring the MAO Bylaws and unlawfully taking control of MAO and, as such, the present Board lacks the legal authority to act on behalf of MAO. The move comes on the heels of an embittered battle that dates back to early 2018 to wrestle control of MAO from Chairwoman and former Miss America 1989, Gretchen Elizabeth Carlson Close; and CEO Regina Hopper, former Miss Arkansas. 1983.

Both women, as well as the current MAO Board, are named as defendants in the suit.

The lawsuit requests a Temporary Restraining Order and Preliminary Injunction to maintain the “status quo” as it existed prior to a thwarted Board vote in June 2018 aimed at limiting Carlson’s authority as Chair and her subsequent illegal unseating of two Board members, until the Court can determine the veracity and merits of the Complaint. The states that have had their licenses officially revoked include Georgia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee, as well as New Jersey, Florida and New York. Colorado resigned its license agreement shortly after the September 9, 2018 live national ABC telecast.

The nearly year-long battle for control of MAO has had deleterious consequences. Since the effort to unseat Hopper and Carlson began, MAO has seen resignations by more than a dozen staff, Board and Foundation members, suspended or terminated seven state licenses, had one state resign its license, and had scores of volunteers state that they do not support the current leadership and are leaving the Miss America system because they believe the Organization no longer supports its primary mission: providing scholarships to young women at the local, state and national level. Incredibly, as of today, 46 state pageant licensees have called for the resignations and 23,509 stakeholders have signed a petition initiated by 23 former Miss America’s calling for the resignations of Carlson, Hopper and the Board of Trustees.1 “MAO leadership misled thousands of Miss America volunteers and titleholders, as well as the American people who have followed this competition for decades,” said ousted Board member and former Miss North Carolina Jennifer Vaden Barth. “In doing so, they have characterized anyone who opposes their decisions and those who are resistant to national Pageant changes, primarily the elimination of the iconic swimsuit competition, as troublemakers and a ‘noisy minority.’ This could not be any farther from the truth.”

https://www.change.org/p/statelicensees1-gmail-com-miss-america-needs-you

The plaintiffs argue that the MAO leadership is guilty of mismanaging financial resources; misleading MAO officials about the future of the telecast, its primary source of revenue and greatest PR vehicle; disseminating blatant mistruths especially where state pageant officials and contestants were concerned; manipulating the rules, disregarding established law and ignoring the Organization’s Bylaws to suit their own personal purposes; and lacking fair dealing and transparency in managing the 501(c)(4) nonprofit.

The 35-page lawsuit (available at https://tinyurl.com/ligtigation-documents states that “Carlson used the rules when it [was] convenient, and ignored them when it [was] an impediment.” Supporters of the Miss America system say that since Carlson became Board Chair in early 2018, anyone in a position of authority who opposed Carlson’s decisions was removed from their positions or illegally forced to resign.

In response to the groundswell of support from the dissenters, Carlson used her illegally obtained Chairmanship to reconfigure the national Board of Trustees, appointing those who would support her decisions to remake the decades-long Pageant telecast (September 9, 2018 on ABC), in favor of those consistent with her own personal brand and agenda. The 2018 Pageant telecast earned its lowest ratings since Miss America 1955, Lee Ann Meriwether of California was crowned on live TV in September 1954.

“This is the first step in restoring the integrity and credibility of Miss America, which has been a cultural icon since 1921,” said Barth, who indicated that further details, evidence and documentation about the legal action would be forthcoming in January 2019. Arguing the case for the plaintiffs is Paul Perkins, Esq., a skilled litigator, licensed to practice law in both New Jersey and New York. Mr. Perkins represents a variety of clientele from small business owners, nonprofits, individuals, and large corporations doing business internationally.

He successfully served as Executive Director for a prominent nonprofit, and today represents several philanthropic organizations in a legal capacity. Mr. Perkins is expected to be joined by co-counsel Emily C. Ward, Esq., a former state titleholder in the Miss America system, as another experienced litigator who represents individual and corporate civil plaintiffs and white-collar defendants in Georgia.

Finally, a message from the organizers of the GoFundMe campaign: We have surpassed the $41,000 mark in our effort to raise funds to defray the costs involved in changing the MAO Leadership, and we sincerely thank those who have contributed! Does anyone know why Miss Ocean County was allowed to go from a closed pageant to an open pageant and except contestants after orientation? That doesn't seem at all fair when the local pageants are getting 4 and 5 contestants but Ocean has problems so they let her open it. The board needs to go!

Why can't they group the titles together then put them in the order by the date of the pageant, it would make life so much easier instead of having to scroll from top to bottom to find out which one is next

Sponsors should not be backstage with contestants and should ABSOLUTELY not be taking photos of them in their rehearsal outfits and posting to social media without the ladies’ permission.

Sponsors should not be promoting or highlighting specific contestants before the competition they are sponsoring begins.

The state really shouldn’t be letting this happen. The numbers for this local are incredible but the contestants are being made to feel very uncomfortable by this situation.

Have you been looking for an easy way to explain to your non-pageant friends or coworkers who are wondering what's going on? Have you perhaps been wishing there was a simple way to express to judges, sponsors, network employees why you are disappointed in their participation? Then this tweetable graphic may be just this thing for you.

So Donna repost the resignation letter of Ashley Byrd on the Miss NJ Facebook page. Her comment is....I hope that MAO and the volunteers can work this out before it gets worse. ARE YOU KIDDING. Of course it’s going to get worse, sitting back and waiting for more resignations is what got us to this point.

2018 Miss America Cara Mund, Shares Disturbing Behind The Scenes Treatment

August 17, 2018 / Miss America, TOP STORY

Cara Mund
Cara Mund

SAD & SHOCKING NEWS. Thx to Ventnor resident & 1984 Miss America, Suzette Charles, for sending us the following letter. Dated Aug 16, 2018, this was written by Cara Mund, the reigning 2018 Miss America.

Dear Miss America Sisters,

I was extremely touched to receive the care package you sent to me in Orlando with your words of encouragement. It was so thoughtful, and it arrived at exactly the time I needed it most. Thank you so much.

I know there’s a lot of talk right now about the interview I gave to the Press of Atlantic City. Since my time as Miss America is growing short, I want to clear some things up directly with all of you. I apologize ahead of time for the length of this letter, but be assured that what I’m going to tell you is just the tip of the iceberg.

The rhetoric about empowering women, and openness and transparency, is great; however, the reality is quite different. I am living that difference. To stay silent is to give away my power and the power of the women who will follow me.

I am not comfortable with any of us being controlled, manipulated, silenced, or bullied.

I’m also not blind to the relationship between manipulation and plausible deniability. By standing up for myself, I am standing up for all the women who will follow me. At this point, my integrity—and saying and doing the right thing—means more to me than whatever punishment may await me.

When I became Miss America, there were three things I truly looked forward to: using my voice, working on behalf of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and being an example of an empowered young woman of my generation. The reality, though, has been quite different.

Let me be blunt: I strongly believe that my voice is not heard nor wanted by our current leadership; nor do they have any interest in knowing who I am and how my experiences relate to positioning the organization for the future. I truly felt more valued, respected, and viewed as a real collaborator within my first three months rather than these last eight months. The differences in treatment are stark.

miss america carlson
Gretchen Carlson, Chairwoman of Miss America Organization

Our chair and CEO have systematically silenced me, reduced me, marginalized me, and essentially erased me in my role as Miss America in subtle and not-so-subtle ways on a daily basis.

After a while, the patterns have clearly emerged, and the sheer accumulation of the disrespect, passive-aggressive behavior, belittlement, and outright exclusion has taken a serious toll.

Shortly after the new board took over, I was given three talking points that I was required to use at every appearance and on which I would be critiqued:
•Miss America is relevant.
•The #MeToo movement started with a Miss America, Gretchen Carlson.
•Gretchen Carlson went to Stanford (I was also allowed to mention my own education at Brown University to show that we are both well-educated leaders).

Right away, new leadership delivered an important message: There will be only one Miss America at a time, and she isn’t me.

To reinforce this, they told me that I’m not important enough to do big interviews, and that the major press is “obviously” reserved for Gretchen. Step out of line there and not only do you get treated to being pulled into the office for a dressing down by Regina, but Brent Adams also joins in on the action.

I was told that it’s my fault sponsors have dropped MAO, because I am supposedly “bad at social media.” These days I can only post on my personal social media sites. I no longer have the ability to post freely and engage with followers on the official Miss America accounts like all of my predecessors. Even when it comes to sponsors, I no longer have this ability.

Last week I posted at an event for CMN Hospitals; a few days later, it was removed. In fact, they have now removed my photo from the official CMN fundraising page and replaced it with last year’s Miss America. They post officially for me and as me—misspellings and all—without informing the public that it is not me posting, and often utilize these accounts to promote Gretchen and Regina’s activities. When they shrink my voice in this way, it eliminates my chance to be a spokesperson for my generation on the very platforms where we consume our content.

When Gretchen announced the elimination of swimsuit on Good Morning America, I was also in New York. Although I had already been told by Regina that GMA only wanted Gretchen on the segment, I served as my own advocate and asked if I could attend. Our CEO replied, “Oh, we thought you wanted to sleep in—but sure.” That morning I stood behind the cameras and filmed Gretchen on the GMA set with my phone. Later that day I passed a producer who recognized me, stopped me, and expressed dismay that she didn’t even know I was in the studio. She then asked permission to interview me to get “Miss America’s perspective”. I truly didn’t know what to say to her.

No one needs to remind me that being Miss America is a job.

I have known that and prepared myself to be the spokesperson for this organization with every single thing I have done and every experience I have had, learning from each person I met and each conversation I participated in. Such comments are condescending and are meant solely to suggest I don’t understand this “big girl job” or how and why Miss America is relevant. That could not be further from the truth.

Gretchen and Brent went to Cannes, representing the organization at a global marketing and advertising conference where Gretchen spoke about Miss America in the era of #MeToo. While they were in France, I was back in North Dakota. If I’d been invited to attend and speak about the relevance of Miss America, I would have been able to tell the world how I, as a young leader, have firsthand knowledge and experience regarding the ways in which MAO is supposedly poised for the future. Such an invitation would require the leadership to care who I am and maybe learn why the judges selected me in the first place.

An organization that values their employees, takes the time to communicate with them. Prior to the July 25th Miss America Orientation, Regina hadn’t spoken to me since June 6th, and Gretchen hadn’t spoken to me since June 15th. I wasn’t even respected enough to be informed about this year’s competition date/when my job would end… I found it out on Twitter.

Since many of you haven’t had the opportunity to get to know me or have been told “Cara doesn’t want to work with you,” (which couldn’t be further from the truth) here is a little bit more about me. I truly hope you’ll agree that my voice could add value to MAO:

I am the only person in the office with an all encompassing business degree. I graduated with honors in Business, Entrepreneurship, and Organizations with an emphasis in nonprofit organizations. I feel qualified to comment on how a business should function and how employees should be treated. Did you know that I worked with Ashoka, the leading global organization on social impact innovation and integrations, when I was in college? Did you know I completed my senior honors thesis on the Miss America Organization? I went into this job with a strong background in the workings of the organization. I know its strengths and weakness and could have been a valuable resource during this transition.

I have prepared for ups and downs and challenges not just for this job but for any job. My first full-time job was working in Washington, D.C. for Senator John Hoeven. This experience brought me in touch with a wide range of constituents, witnessing their passion for legislation and policies that positively impact their lives. I was working for the Senator during two major events of controversy: 2016 Election and North Dakota’s Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). I know the importance of communication because I was listening and responding to all sides of issues. From that job, I was inspired to continue being an advocate as Miss America. I did everything I could this year to take advantage of this opportunity. I even personally paid part of my airfare to attend the 2018 State of the Union because I wanted Miss America represented!

Messaged in our leadership’s new rhetoric is the importance of women making their own choices and using the universal language of fashion in ways that illustrate and empower them. Working in New York for Agentry PR—a firm specializing in public relations for the fashion industry—gave me a current lens through which to understand what my generation wants to wear and will wear, and how fashion actually can speak about a woman.

In this respect, reality hasn’t just failed to live up to the potential, it has been truly disappointing. Throughout my year, MAO did not have a clothing sponsor. I spent all year buying my own appearance wardrobe. Most of what I bought was rejected, and I was told what I wasn’t permitted to wear.

What happened to the new motto of Miss America getting to express her own sense of style?

The office criticized me for wearing certain items too many times. I frequently had to take pictures of all my outfits, and then my tour manager would come into my hotel room and pick out the clothes I was allowed to wear, saying things like “Regina really likes this one” or “You can’t wear pink. Regina hates pink.” During a photo shoot this year, Regina looked at the Karl Lagerfeld dress I was wearing and said “Yuck. You should burn that. Don’t ever wear that again.”

I eventually reached out to two of the former Miss Americas on the board about some of the issues I had been facing. After Heather French Henry advocated for me, I was reprimanded by Regina who told me that problems and concerns had to be kept “in the family.” If a fellow sister who is also a board member is not “in the family,” who is?

I understand that I am the representative of a brand and a company and employed to do a job. That does not mean that an employer can treat you however they feel like treating you that day. Employers are legally required to provide a workplace free from harassment and bullying. I have been constantly reminded of the provisions in my employment contract that prohibit me from speaking freely:

● The employee’s relationship with the MAO may be terminated at any time, for any reason.

● The employee agrees that the employee will not disparage or subvert the MAO, nor make any statement reflecting negatively on the MAO or its affiliates, principals, employees, agents, or representatives.

● During the term, or at any time thereafter, employee shall not disparage or otherwise make any unfavorable statements, oral or written, or perform any act or omission, which is detrimental to the reputation or goodwill of MAO. For purpose of the prior sentence, MAO shall mean MAO, its successors and affiliates, and their officers, directors and employees.

I signed my contract shortly after I was crowned, without an attorney present, and without a member of the staff or the board there to witness it. When the new leadership came in, I hoped that they would loosen things up a bit, at least to make it consistent with the National Contestant Contract that I actually had time to review and which states that I serve until my successor is chosen at the next National Finals.

But that didn’t happen. My contract still says—and I am regularly reminded by word and action—that I can be fired anytime, with or without cause. In Orlando, the contestants were interested in seeing the employment contract they will be required to sign, but the leadership would not give anyone a copy. Some asked if they could see mine. I am living the contradiction of being “open and transparent”.

About two weeks ago, I started researching workplace bullying. In the State of New Jersey, it is defined as “deliberate insults, threats, demeaning comments, constant criticism, overbearing supervision, profane outbursts, blatant ostracism, being overworked or simply not communicating with colleagues. More subtle forms of bullying can include withholding or supplying incorrect work-related information, sabotaging projects, passive/aggressive behavior, blocking promotions, providing unclear or contradictory instruction or requesting unnecessary or menial work.”

Ultimately, this is my year in a nutshell. Here are some further examples of my time at orientation. Understand that these types of things happen to me every single day.

In Orlando, I watched as the board members and staff sat up front for a meeting with the contestants and state directors, while I was told to go stand in the back of the room and not say anything. When Gretchen and Regina expressed their admiration for me, it was quite disingenuous given our lack of communication, how little they know about me, and especially their false claim that I arrived at 2 am – when in fact I spent the entire prior evening with the teen contestants, attended the MAOT competition, and did my job as Miss America until the last person who wanted to meet me and have their photo taken with me had left the room. The tour manager’s flight was delayed, so, for once, I did not have her listening in on every conversation I had, reporting back to the office who I talk to and what I say, nor was I smothered—at least briefly—with a ridiculous level of security charged with making sure people did not get a chance to speak to me one-on-one.

There’s also a concerning back channel among the staff and leadership of reporting false information about me. It paints me in a light that is untrue and definitely unfair. You will have to ask yourself what their motives are, because I have given up trying to understand this game. For instance, in Orlando, I was attending the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital Dance Marathon. I was told by the tour manager to meet her at a certain time and place. I left my room to get to the appointed spot on time. When she was late, I checked my phone and saw that four minutes before our scheduled meet time, she’d sent me another text changing the location. Before I could even answer her, I received a text meant for one of the security guards assigned to me (sent to me by mistake) where the tour manager claimed that I was “MIA, again!” Reality did not fit this latest fake scenario, as I was not MIA. I never have been. I was exactly where I was supposed to be.

On another night that week, I was excited to host a pizza party for the incoming class of amazing young women eager to learn about the job they are vying for. Contestants were ready for frank and honest dialogue with me. That is also what I was promised. Instead, into the room walked the tour manager and two security guards, Marc Angeli, and Regina, who promptly took their seats. You could feel the mood shift in the room; the message of intimidating me into silence, making sure I “keep it in the family” was sent and received.

As if that weren’t enough, Regina intentionally belittled me in front of the contestants, seemingly forgetting my name and calling me “Kira”. Of the 5 MAO staff members in attendance, not a single one corrected her. In fact, the next morning the tour manager “pulled a Regina” and identified my name incorrectly again. Several contestants came up to me after and said “ I can’t believe they don’t know your name.”’ If I can be so openly belittled—to the point where my actual, personal identity is removed in front of the contestants—it can, and will, happen to them too. It was another low point for me.

No Miss America should be humiliated or erased. Ever.

So, I want to ask you a favor. Just take a minute to reflect on how you might feel had you held the title this past year. I never expected my year to be perfect, especially under the circumstances. Imagine what it would be like if you were alone, not knowing who you could trust. Imagine that you finally got up the courage to speak up, not just for yourself, but for the fifty-one women who are dreaming that they will have your job just a month from now. Imagine how it would feel if it was actually two of your fellow Miss Americas who slapped back in the press and threw you under the bus. What you said couldn’t be true, right? It must just be that you misunderstood what it meant to have an adult job. I’ll skip to the end: it was devastating. Do I not deserve a voice because my experience has been different from theirs?

It didn’t take me six months to see that my actions reflected on the organization. I understood that on day one. Or that it was a job, and a difficult one at that. That’s always been pretty obvious. I don’t want to leave this mess for the next Miss America. This is not a self-serving organization, and I want her year to be better than my year. This letter is for her. I don’t want her to have to live in constant fear, expecting to be degraded and punished while she should be having an amazing experience.

If you want Miss America to be relevant, then the leadership needs to understand she is not a wind-up toy who they can power up to spit out the meaningless words that are put into her mouth, and then put back on the shelf until it’s time to do it again. I do not want her to have to stand in the back, literally or metaphorically.

As many of you know, the Press of Atlantic City story posted on a Saturday. As I expected, the retribution was swift. Within 72 hours, I was told my final farewell as Miss America would be cut to a total of 30 seconds for the national telecast. The following day, I was told my custom “Show Me Your Shoes” Parade Costume which had already been made, publicized by the designer, and based on a July 2018 agreement with MAO would no longer be allowed. How will we get sponsors if their word means nothing? Not only are they dictating my final appearance, but they are also reducing my final words.

I haven’t felt like Miss America for the last 8 months, and now, they are even taking away my goodbye.

I never expected—or wanted—to have to be a whistleblower. I am so saddened that the board seems more inclined to look the other way than to speak out. I ask you for your help, support, and voices, because I have no doubt that without them, the leadership will simply continue to push out, silence, and tighten security to reduce access around Miss America. Miss America is fragile right now. She needs all of us if she is going to survive.

Cara

15) We are three weeks away from what should be a historic moment of celebrating the amazing 51 candidates who have chosen to compete for the job of Miss America. We should be celebrating them. Cara, please join us in doing so.

14) My goal for the last eight months has been to keep Miss America vital and remain laser focused on the candidates who have chosen to participate.

13) The impact won’t stop there — we are already seeing a negative ripple effect across the entire organization, and I am so concerned that it will dilute the experience for the next woman selected to wear the crown.

12) Actions have consequences. Friday, as an organization, we learned that $75,000 in scholarships which would have been the first scholarship increase in years, is no longer on the table as a direct result of the explosive allegations in your letter.

11) Cara, you have the opportunity to be at the forefront of real, positive change for young women across this country. I am so hopeful you’ll be a part of that.

10) You are at the epicenter of a very historic moment for women. Over the past two years, our country has undergone a seismic shift in how professional women are depicted and treated.

9)It surely was not what you had expected. We’ve acknowledged your grievances, and taken many steps to try to make your experience a good one.

8) I also want to be clear that I have never bullied or silenced you. In fact, I have acknowledged to you and your parents many times that the organization understands the frustrations of serving during such a change-filled & stressful year.

7) As a Brown graduate, you aspire to go to law school and one day run for Governor in your home state of North Dakota. You embody the mission of Miss America.

6) but I remain hopeful we can speak on the phone or in person soon.

Cara, let me be clear: We, as an organization, are very proud of you and all you have accomplished. You are smart, caring and ambitious.

5)Since her letter was posted, I have reached out to Cara via phone, text & email to try to speak, as I have always felt this is the best way to air grievances & find resolution. Unfortunately, Cara’s response has been that she only wants to communicate via email

4) So I was surprised and saddened beyond words by the letter from our reigning Miss America Cara Mund. I so wished Cara had picked up the phone and discussed her concerns with me directly, before going to the media with allegations of bullying.

3) From day one, the board had a lot on its plate:enormous debt, lack of sponsors, waning relevancy. But after making some tough decisions, including elimination of swimsuit we were on-track to deliver a 2018 pageant truly devoted to women’s talents, intelligence & individualism.

‏
2) The program had given me so much, but I knew that re-positioning the organization would require real strength and commitment.

1) When the Miss America Organization was confronted with the email scandal last year, the majority of former Miss Americas nominated me to become Chair of the Board – an unpaid, volunteer, full-time position. I accepted the challenge with some trepidation.

To all Miss America volunteers and fans, please read this VERY IMPORTANT letter and share it today!
Dear State Directors, Local Directors and Loyal Volunteers,
First and foremost, thank you for all that you do to make the Miss America Program a reality. You are the heart and soul of our organization.
We humbly ask for your undivided attention as you read this letter. You are our last hope.
We are so grateful for the efforts that many of you have undertaken to have your voices be heard by the leadership of the Miss America Organization. We are inspired by your love for the pageant, your persistence and your courage.
We have joined you in raising our voices and have tried with all of our might and strength to preserve the traditions of Miss America, but we cannot accomplish our mission without your clear, unequivocal and immediate response. The hour is late and the time for unified action is upon us now. We cannot delay, we cannot wish this current crisis away, and we cannot push it off to deal with at some later date.
Miss America is engaged in a great struggle about its identity and its future direction. We did not choose this struggle. It began because our past leaders demeaned women, breached their trust, harmed our brand, and needed to be removed. It was their actions alone that required a change in leadership. We made that change with the hope of creating unity and stability for our beloved organization.
In good faith, we joined together with a unified voice and decided that it would be best if our new leaders came from among our own ranks so that our voices and opinions would be heard and acknowledged at the national level. But in choosing our new leaders, we now recognize that we chose individuals that have sought to use MAO for their own self-centered purposes, not to regain trust and unite us. Instead these new leaders have decided to use this opportunity to force changes that we have not sought and that we did not demand.
Worse still, they have used their position and our goodwill to demean those in our ranks, to publicly question our ethics and motives, and they have made significant changes to our organization under false pretenses. It is hard to believe that this is the approach and tactics that our new leaders have adopted, but this is the place in which we now find ourselves, and we must again demand and require immediate change.
Upon further consideration of the facts, we now agree with the petition signed by the very brave 22 states’ executives. We understand that to begin again we must call for the resignations of our Chairwoman, our CEO and the entire Board of Trustees. Ultimately, we want to support the will of the states, and from what we gather, the 22 states are not the “noisy minority,” but in actuality, they include a quiet majority-who are just not ready to speak out-but why prolong the inevitable? As with the previous board, we asked formers to step down not because of personal reasons, but simply because they were part of the old regime that didn’t work. We are grateful to those former Miss Americas for graciously stepping down, even though their hearts were in the right place. They put aside any personal agendas and submitted to the will of the majority, in order to show respect and love for our organization. We honor those sisters for making the right decision, and we ask out leadership to do the same now.
The national leadership should seek the consent of the governed – we elected them and they need to answer to those they profess to serve. We had hoped that the reconstituted Board would work with truth and integrity. Regrettably, they have used their positions to mislead us, to systematically change many things that we hold dear, and they have removed (and threatened to remove) anyone who disagrees with their views. Have you stopped to consider what happens if the 22 states who signed the petition in July lose their licenses?
As you know, the telecast for this year is not in jeopardy, but the fate of the entire Miss America system is in great jeopardy if we do not act now. We are losing local competitions every day – they are just walking away. We are losing sponsors at the state and local levels. We are losing contestants who can’t afford the time or money needed to have an attorney review a 25-page contract. These and other onerous changes are pulling our organization apart on every level and in every state!
By signing your name to the Vote of No Confidence petition TODAY, you provide us with the ability to start the rebuilding process NOW. We can begin to put in place some safety nets in the event that the TV network, Casino Reinvestment Development Association (CRDA) and the production company decide not to continue supporting MAO and its mission. There is a group of experienced people ready to step in and play a transitional role with the production company and network.
A number of leaders within the states are prepared to drive solutions that flatten out the organizational structure. Right now, MAO is a top-down structure that keeps at a distance the state organizations that do 90% of the work. Decisions made by people who do not have their personal finances, reputations, business networks, communities etc involved in the heavy lift that’s involved in running a volunteer state or local organization cannot possibly know what is needed to keep the national organization nimble, responsive, ahead of the trends, and of course financially sound.
At its heart, Miss America is a grassroots volunteer organization and your state and local organizations are the lifeblood of this amazing nationwide system. The current leadership team has not served us well over the past 8 months, so it is necessary once again to elect a new leadership team that can unify our ranks. Miss America is bigger than any one or two individuals. The Miss America program has survived for 100 years because of you, and it must survive for another 100 years. But we must not allow the current leadership team to continue making changes to our program, some of which could be irreparable.
You and your volunteers are the heart and soul of this organization. You are our last hope. We need you to respond today, please, because we are running out of time.
Sincerely,
Miss America 1984 Suzette Charles

State Executive Directors and State Boards:

Yesterday, the Miss America Board of Directors convened to discuss recent events and the organization’s collective path forward. First and foremost, each state titleholder should feel confident that she is coming to Atlantic City to compete for Miss America on equal footing and a level playing field. Because MAO is, above all, about the young women who participate in this program, we will put their interests first and make sure that each candidate knows - without a shadow of doubt - that there will be no impact whatsoever on those state candidates whose state organizations chose to support the petition or have taken other actions against MAO. The candidates have our firm and unwavering commitment to ensure a fair and engaging process for each of them, that we will be laser-focused on delivering a successful Miss America 2019, creating a lifetime experience for each of them, and for all future candidates moving forward.

Second, we are choosing for our leadership to be different. The board has determined that there have been clear breaches of the state organization agreements with MAO, however, there will be no immediate license termination for those state organization that signed the petition. This is not intended to send a message or set an expectation that these actions are acceptable now or going forward, as they have in fact, adversely impacted the organization’s national brand and opportunities for outside support and partnerships. It is simply an act of good faith for the benefit of the program and to underscore the sincerity of our request that we all put differences of opinions aside and come together in order to improve the former culture and share in the vision for our true purpose. Only in this way will we be able to collectively ensure that Miss America grows to embrace new and experienced candidates with open arms and minds.

Since January, MAO’s volunteer leadership team has negotiated securing the CRDA funds of $4.3 million that were very publicly in jeopardy, and a new production company, reduced the state contestant CMNH fees to half of the announced amount, negotiated with all of you new license agreements that removed arbitration clauses and opened the door for more people to be allowed to volunteer in our program, navigated at-large teen issues for states as well as operational structure guidance for states with the teen program, instituted the new age requirement language, and many other tactical wins for our grassroots and national program.

We ask that each of you search within yourselves and decide if this path is one that you are willing to be a part of and it is a sincere request that we begin to heal together and share in the vision for our true purpose. We are all passionate volunteers, just like you, working for these bright, young women who are capable of incredible accomplishments.

Please understand that every member of this board is always available to discuss concerns and thoughts. We ask that you communicate with us, as we work to put in place more avenues of communication. Also, please participate in calls, ask questions, respect confidentiality and, if there are concerns, raise them so they can be constructively addressed.

This board and leadership sincerely hope that you will be a part of building a bright future. We all agree that there are opportunities to grow and improve and most certainly that Miss America can do incredible things for young women. Let us move forward with purpose and patience for each other while keenly focused on the need for all of us to have healthy, viable and sustainable programs at the local, state, and national levels to truly be successful.

We ask that you please share this letter with your state board members, your state volunteers, your candidates, and your local volunteers.

Respectfully,

Gretchen Carlson, Heather French Henry, Debbye Turner Bell, Jessie Ward Bennett, Ashley Byrd, Mary Jane Clark, Shelley Robertson, Ike Franco

Regina Hopper

Attention Contestants and Local Executive Directors:
Effective April 25, 2015 all Local Titleholders must resign their local titles, in writing, to both their local and the state organization BEFORE attending the orientation for and competing in another Miss New Jersey/Miss America Local Pageant that is being held prior to the end of their year of service.
Once a contestant has relinquished her title, she IS NOT permitted to “give up her title” or make any type of farewell remarks at that year’s local contest as she is no longer considered a local titleholder in the Miss New Jersey system.

Attention to ED’s out there who have remained silent over Sam’s actions. You are doing so in the hopes to not ruin a self-serving relationship you cultivated with Sam over all these years. You’ve most likely heard him speak this way about former Miss America’s, and it emboldened you to malign your own state titleholders. And some of you do it regularly and without restraint. This has got to stop. As a state ED you should never speak poorly of your own state titleholder, no matter what the situation is. Instead you need to sit down with your titleholder and her support system (parents, local directors, etc.) and kindly mentor and share your expectations. Very simple. But from this point on, maligning will not be tolerated any longer. You know who you are. It stops today. #zerotolerance

Miss America showed that we need to send girls who are:
1- facially beautiful
2- well spoken
3- well proportioned
4- well styled
5- adequately talented

They do not have to be the most talented, but they have to be very entertaining. Kaitlyn is very very beautiful and that obviously helps. Argue about it being a beauty pageant all you want but she looked amazing and made it so far. Who do we have now who could do the same for us next year?

Way to go Miss NJ ! Best performance by a Jersey girl in many years . We are so proud of you . You are our new queen. Now I wish some of the former Miss NJ's would stop posting on FB . Your reins are over!

You know I'm getting kind of pissed that year after year we send good, beautiful, intelligent women to this dang competition only to be shut out time and time again. I'm not saying that I'm giving up on this year yet and I know the comp. isn't over but what the heck is the problem? Ok so I get that maybe we'll never have a Miss A, I can accept that. But not even a prelim winner once in a while! Talent and evening gown maybe in the eye of the beholder but how much of a better swim body does a girl need to have than our current girl? I mean come on judges?? Am I missing something? Or is it that were NJ? Is that the real problem? Can someone explain this to me? I'd really like to know.

So another year without a Top 15. When will the organization get their heads out from their asses and actually help these girls. Our NJ girls need to be making big strides between Miss NJ and Miss America not small ones if we want to compete on the national level.

You want to bring in sponsors Miss NJ org? How about helping a girl make the top 15 or top 10 at Miss America. That will help you get sponsors. Give the girls some wardrobe help. Some styling help. A list of dance instructors or singing coaches to choose from. Oh and fitness? Lord have mercy please stop turning our girls into body builders. Before you give me that body type bologna, understand that with the right training and dieting you can avoid the body builder look.

We've sent some amazing girls to Miss America over the past 10 years. Some needed a lot of changes to make the finals. Some needed maybe one or two. It's too bad that these girls seem to not be getting the help they need to compete on the national stage.

So Myra was stripped of her title and not allowed to crown out EVEN THOUGH SHE HAD AGED OUT OF THE SYSTEM, but now Rachelle is going to Sweetheart and is allowed to post about it on her titleholder social media??? What's with the double standard here? She got to apply for Sweetheart and keep her title?

Why are rulebreakers constantly allowed to return to this system? Are we this desperate for numbers?
A girl who has a title in another system is signed up for the shore pageant
and a girl who lost her title because she LIED ABOUT HER AGE is allowed to compete again this summer? And no doubt Rachelle will just keep competing after this

Why do we bother having RULES........

The declining numbers are not because of north vs. south issue.

NJ board and directors do not recruit sponsors for In kind scholarships, salon services, and interview preparation like other states. Therefore, the prize packages are lacking. Directors and board members should be attending business conventions and meeting with NJ colleges to secure relationships with vendors.

Scholarship money is what professional women are in search of. They do not want to enter a pageant and win 200 dollars when it costs more than that for their swimsuit or gown.

The costs of the pageants are astronomical. Contestants are in college but are made to sell ads for their spots, and are constantly handing out more money for fundraisers and activities throughout the year. The cost of the wardrobe needed for pageant week proves this point. (Parade, numerous cocktail dresses)

Closing pageants and limiting girls to compete only 3 times after investing in a wardrobe and filling out the mountain of paperwork is ridiculous. Girls will give up and move on.

Subject: food for thought on why the BIG changes in the New Jersey system

Date Posted: 08:05:57 06/28/17 Wed

Charles won the Miss Columbus Day title before becoming Miss New Jersey.
Both Consalvo and Sarto said that they have seen a dramatic change in the Miss New Jersey Competition over the years.
Sally Johnston, executive director of Miss New Jersey, said pageants in North Jersey fell off when Miss America opened up the rules on who could compete in a particular pageant.
A contestant used to have to live, work or go to school in a particular county to compete in the local pageants. Now, the pageants are more wide open. Because most directors of local pageants live in South Jersey, the pageants in North Jersey started to disappear.
But Johnston said the organization is actively working to bring pageants back to central and northern counties.
“My goal is to make this a state pageant,” she said. “We’re looking for more county pageants, and we would really like to see some colleges host pageants as well.”
New Jersey used to have a Miss Rutgers University in the Miss New Jersey pageant, she said.
As pageants in the northern part of the state began to drop off, contestants started coming down and competing in south and central pageants.
But the reduction in pageants up north has coincided with Miss hax New Jersey being less competitive in the Miss America pageant. Miss New Jersey has not placed in the top 15 at Miss America since Jennifer Farrell in 2003.
Sarto said part of that is because New Jersey isn’t a “sash state,” or a state that makes pageant’s a high priority with sponsorships and generations of training.
Sash states are the ones that produce,” she said. “There’s about 10 of them; You have people there who are pageant addicts… it’s 24-hours-a-day pageantry.
Sarto said that Oklahoma, Georgia, Florida, Texas, and California, among others, are considered “sash states.” New Jersey started to lose some sponsorships in the 1990s, she said.
“When you look at the gifts Miss New Jersey gets now compared to 10-15 years ago, it’s completely different,” she said.

This information has been taken from the Miss NJ website, Facebook posts made by local directors and titleholders, and local pageant websites. There are a lot of changes but they are set for this season. All we can do is try to keep on top of things and help those still eligible to know where they can compete, especially new girls who are out of the loop.

As Brenna told us at orientation, look at each other through eyes of love. If you're new and need any help and somehow ended up on here, find me on Facebook and I'll be more than happy to help you find where you're eligible and how to get in touch with whomever you need.

I don't think it's fair to have any on stage question about a news story that broke on the same day as final pageant. The Cosby trial "hung jury" was just today right? How could any contestant even know about it. I mean they've been kinda busy today. Anybody agree with me?

and why are we printing all of these darn contracts why, why, why??/ It's a complete waste of paper, why do you need a contract for every pageant why can't you just take the pages that need to be notarized what do you do have a box for every girl or do you just toss them in the trash?
It's ridiculous..

The organization was found wrong. The organization was on probation for low scholarships and financial problems. The organization is ran by LEAH SUMMERS and the teen is directed by Donna Newman. The organization provides a production of 160,000 a year. The revenue is 200,000 a year with less than 2 - 3 % going to contestants. No proof of paying any teen was found in taxes or documents discovered from 2010 to 2016. The organization would not provide paperwork as requested. The Miss and Teen is meshed together on taxes. SO much wrong.... it is hard to describe. Misleading, exaggerated, withheld information.

The Miss Kentucky’s Outstanding Teen (MKYOT) Pageant's Princess Program is for young ladies age five to ten years old (as of May 27, 2017 birth certificate required). The MKYOT Princess Program is an extension of Miss Kentucky’s Bluegrass Princess Program with a goal of mentoring those young ladies who have an interest in advocating community service and of someday participating in the MKYOT Scholarship Pageant and/or the Miss Kentucky Scholarship Pageant. MKYOT contestants will mentor the MKYOT Princesses. All MKYOT Princesses will participate in some aspect of the stage production at the MKYOT Pageant in Louisville, KY. Princesses will also be recognized in the MKYOT Pageant Program Book.

The Princess will have the opportunity as provided by the local pageant director and local titleholder to be a part of the titleholder's year of service. She is encouraged to go shopping with the local titleholder, to accompany the local titleholder on appearances, exercise with her, etc. The local titleholder is encouraged to engage her Princess in any activity that she can to make her feel part of her year of service as she prepares for the MKYOT Pageant.

Each Princess is to provide her own white dress (long gown, short party dress or “Sunday-best” are all appropriate choices. The dress must be ALL white (no rhinestones, silver, gold or colored stones and must be approved by the Princess Committee) and appropriate for the age of the young lady. Each Princess is responsible for her own lodging and meals during pageant weekend. Also, each princess must submit a head shot photo by email for the 2017 MKYOT Pageant Program Book.

The princess participation fee is $ 200 ---After approved, a $100 deposit due with application and the balance due and payable by the MKYOT Contestant Orientation on April 9, 2017. This participation fee includes an Official MKYOT Princess Crown (which will be worn onstage), a MKYOT Princess T-Shirt, and one (1) ticket (Program Book not included) to each of both Preliminary Competitions and to the Final Competition. This ticket is for use by a family member. The MKYOT Princess does not require a ticket for admission.

Within the three (3) months before my participation in the first local or state competition in which I am competing this year, and since that participation, I have not authorized any person, firm or corporation to use my name, photograph, picture, or present or future title that I hold or may hold, in connection with an endorsement to advertise any commercial product.

that certainly includes letting an online casino use your photograph to advertise their website....... and posting online to endorse it.......

why do some girls get to keep breaking rules ??

Singers - Opera, classical, and semi-classical

Opera singers, Classical singers, and Semi-Classical singers, another staple of the Miss America Talent competition. At least one made Top 10 in each of the first 25 years the competition has been televised (1954-1978).

What is "semi-classical singing" you might ask? Well for many years it simply meant that you were singing And This Is My Beloved from the musical Kismet (the same show that gave us Baubles, Bangles, and Beads & Stranger In Paradise). The melodies in Kismet were adapted from the works of the 19th Century Russian composer Alexander Borodin (classical music used for a Broadway show, that was originally commissioned by the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera). Think of songs sung with an operatic approach but which are not from the traditional opera canon. Some contestants have listed their talent as semi-classical when singing from The Phantom Of The Opera (which I chose to put on the Broadway list instead of here).

We've seen the most in Top 10 during the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 90s - with noticeably fewer in the 80s, 00s, and 10s.

The selections performed most often by Top 10 Finalists have been:
Quando me'n vo (La boheme) (5 times)
Ah, Je veux vivre (Romeo & Juliet) (5)
Una Voce Poco Fa (The Barber of Seville) (4)
Habanera (Carmen) (4)
And This Is My Beloved (Kismet) (4)
Summertime (Porgy and Bess) (4)
I did a blog about opera singers that includes an anecdote about Yolande Betbeze, Miss Alabama 1950/Miss America 1951 in July, 2014. Scroll back thru the blog posts and read it.

Why are rule breakers allowed to keep competing???

A girl who LIED about her eligibility and was dethroned as a teen allowed to compete as a miss???

A girl who LIED about not holding another title not being punished and allowed to compete again this year???

And SOME girls allowed to compete where they won last year but not ALL????

That's beside the preferred treatment that sons get from directors
Why have rules if girls can break them without consequense?? Disgusted that again and again NOTHING gets done.......................
