Message Board for Nurses in Recovery Web Site
Welcome. This board was created by Karen Tucker to offer a supportive place for Nurses or other Medical Professionals in Recovery and for those seeking relief from addiction and its consequences. Since Karen’s death in 2003, there is a group of us who are interested in keeping Karen’s dream alive, and continue to carry the message. We are very glad that you found us, and we encourage you to share your story, or your questions and comments so that we may get to know you better and in turn share our experience strength and hope with each other. Whether you are currently clean and sober or wish to be, this forum is a great place to start. We would like to ask that you follow a few guidelines of etiquette when you participate on this forum. We encourage you to share what life is like for you clean and sober rather than sharing war stories. A little about what brought you to recovery is welcome! We find we often have similar stories and part of recovery is to find a common ground. While it is understood that there are many ways to recover from addiction, please respect those whose path may have been different from yours. Please remember that some people are triggered by war stories, and drug-a-logs and we ask that you try your best to stay in the solution. We like to focus on recovery rather than addiction. Bashing of any sort will result in being banned from this site. The purpose of this site is for support, not for controversial discussions or debates. If you have a concern that needs immediate feedback please type NEED FEEDBACK or NEED IMMEDIATE FEEDBACK in the subject field. Do not take it personally if you do not get responses to all of your posts, it is the nature of communicating by this medium. Share from your own experience and strength as well as promote hope in others rather than directing others in what they "should" do. Do not make medication suggestions for others. PLEASE remember courtesy when posting. We ask that you refrain from any type of profanity, joking or otherwise. If you have a problem with a state recovery monitoring program or a state board of nursing, please contact that program or board. Do not post your complaint here. Please do not suggest that some do differently than their monitoring program has directed them. Thanks, The NIR Steering Committee ********ATTENTION: This is a public forum. After having worked a recovery program in N.A for a number of years, and simultanoeusly working as an R.n, I have come to realize that nurses in general are sick people. Many of the things we do to each other are not healthy, the way we work is not healthy, the way we feel the need to please and perform is not healthy. I have had many different jobs in the last 30 years, and there seems to be a very similar thread with most places and people. Not only that, but employers drive nurses to work extra, to the point of burnout. I am looking for other nurses with a strong recovery who have suggestions of meetings to go to that not only address recovery, but especially the stresses of our professional pressures. Taking care of others is easy, but the work expectations are not, especially when trying to live a healthy recovery life. these observations come from many years of both nursing and recovery. any suggestions would be welcome.

Hi all! I am a nurse that has 1 pending investigation that I could probably get away with, however I recently got caught tampering with a bottle of roxanol. I know I am going to get reported to the BON. I have been going to a day program that lasts about 3 weeks, I have been clean for 14 days. I could probably lie, maybe get away with it, or should i self report? I know I need to start being honest but I'm a little scared I will lose my license forever! why would I ever think I could "get away with it?" any help would be great.

I need advice. I have been a recreational drug user for a few years. I have worked as a step-down nurse in nyc hospital. I had gotten fired for "poor performance" about 2 years ago. I struggled with my addiction for 8 months, but was then able to find a job doing home care begining of this year. i worked that about 4 months, and we mutually decided that i should leave. My poor performance was due to my struggles with my addiction, but was not officially. I have since sent myself to a 30 day program, go to daily meeting, have a sponcer, im working steps, and will have 6 months sobriety january 1st. I do not know how to look for a job with my track record. I got fired from one job, mutually left another, and have big gaps of time inbetween. I live in NYC, and i am very open to suggestion. I do not have a problem with being around narcotics, but would like to stay out of the hospital if i could. Rehab, private practice, clinics. I am open to any suggestions/ ideas/ tips on how to get back into the workforce.
Thank you

I'm in the last semester of my RN program and have been a practicing LPN for about 5 months. I have never taken any meds from work, nor have I been impaired while working. My addiction stemmed from my own prescriptions. I'm ADD and got addicted to Ritalin and had 2 docs prescribing it to me at the same time. I also had a script for lortab and took more then the prescribed dose(no multiple scripts with this one though). I confided in my psychiatrist about my addiction and he said he may notify the BON here in Utah. I have recently began my recovery and am currently in 12 step. What happens with my license and NCLEX situation if I am reported for this? Also, does the BON seek out info from sources to find out if I've ever had an addiction?

I need any advice I can get. Rumors flew through my small town hospital after I was a patient..."I required a lot of narcs as a patient and gave a lot as a nurse...maybe I was a diverter". I have resigned and have one more week of notice to work out. I went to my Risk Manager with the situation and she assures me that I am not being investigated and that she does not suspect me of narcotic diversion. I fear they are lying to me and just waiting until I complete my notice and leave the facility to persue actions with the BON and with filing criminal charges. Does anyone know what kind of evidence it would take to have me arrested or charged with a crime? My BON has mandatory reporting requirements...the exact law states that "it shall be unlawful for any employer of nurses to REFRAIN from reporting to the BON any nurse SUSPECTED of diversion, ect". This has been going on for over three weeks and they have never done a drug screen. If they have PROOF can they wait while I keep working??? How should I proced?

Hi,

I found your older message when I was searching something else. If your still interested in knowing about a secular method of recovery there is an excellent resource at www.smartrecovery.org I spent 5 years there as a facilitator, worked with many professionals and found it to be an effective method. Some work it with other methods jointly some not. I think you'd be pleasantly surprised at what is offered. It's all based on Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy .... which can help anyone, not just someone with addictive issues. They believe in Graduation!

I'm not there any more, but I have been free of my former drug of choice for 25 years

Love and Light,
