Message Board for Nurses in Recovery Web Site
Welcome. This board was created by Karen Tucker to offer a supportive place for Nurses or other Medical Professionals in Recovery and for those seeking relief from addiction and its consequences. Since Karen’s death in 2003, there is a group of us who are interested in keeping Karen’s dream alive, and continue to carry the message. We are very glad that you found us, and we encourage you to share your story, or your questions and comments so that we may get to know you better and in turn share our experience strength and hope with each other. Whether you are currently clean and sober or wish to be, this forum is a great place to start. We would like to ask that you follow a few guidelines of etiquette when you participate on this forum. We encourage you to share what life is like for you clean and sober rather than sharing war stories. A little about what brought you to recovery is welcome! We find we often have similar stories and part of recovery is to find a common ground. While it is understood that there are many ways to recover from addiction, please respect those whose path may have been different from yours. Please remember that some people are triggered by war stories, and drug-a-logs and we ask that you try your best to stay in the solution. We like to focus on recovery rather than addiction. Bashing of any sort will result in being banned from this site. The purpose of this site is for support, not for controversial discussions or debates. If you have a concern that needs immediate feedback please type NEED FEEDBACK or NEED IMMEDIATE FEEDBACK in the subject field. Do not take it personally if you do not get responses to all of your posts, it is the nature of communicating by this medium. Share from your own experience and strength as well as promote hope in others rather than directing others in what they "should" do. Do not make medication suggestions for others. PLEASE remember courtesy when posting. We ask that you refrain from any type of profanity, joking or otherwise. If you have a problem with a state recovery monitoring program or a state board of nursing, please contact that program or board. Do not post your complaint here. Please do not suggest that some do differently than their monitoring program has directed them. Thanks, The NIR Steering Committee ********ATTENTION: This is a public forum. I as a new inexperienced nurse found myself in hand to hand combat with a 96 yr old male patient on psych meds. The poor gent had never been on meds in his life and the staff psychiatrist changed his meds several times within a week. Needless to say he became quite psychotic. Well I lost and the old gent injured my lower back...I was in treatment with injectons and rhizotomies for 3 years. I developed quite a dependence on Percocet and was without a doubt an impaired professional.I turned myself into The BON with 7 months recovery under my belt. I really did want to get well. I signed into a 3 year committment with The Voluntary Recovery Program. For the most part I was as compliant as I could be, I attended 12 step meetings, worked with a sponsor and peed on demand. In November 2007 I was offerred a full time position at a hospital center where I had been a "temp agency staff." They were very happy with my work and considered me an exemplary employee. As I had failed to provide my immediate supervisor with my consent order The Board decided they would discipline me. With just 6 minths to go in the program they brought legal charges against me which has resulted in my being out of work for 18 months. Together with my attorney we won the case and my license was restored. I did receive another 3 years in the program but Im having difficulty finding work. Right there on my newly reissued license is written "ON PROBATION." Does anyone have any sugestions as to what direction I could point myself to, to secure employment. Needless to say my finances are a mess and my home is "at risk." and input would be greatly appreciated.

I was discovered diverting at work in october of 2009. I denied it and was subsequently fired. I called my employer later and admitted my diversion and apologised and informed them I had entered the Florida IPN program. I was told by the investigator at the BON that as long as I was in the program and compliant that my case would be defered pending completion of my 5 year contract. I have been 100% compliant with my program and have had excellent reviews from both the facilitator of the program and my current employer.

Recently, I received a letter from the prosecution division of the DOH(department of health) stating that there was an administrative complaint against me and that there is an agreement to sign which would include Reprimand of my license and entering IPN. It is as if they do not know that I am in IPN.

I have since sent all the information to The DOH including letters from IPn infroming them of my compliance. I am scheduled to go before the BON to explain and try and not get a reprimand on my license.

My question is has anyone ever gone before the BON and has anyone ever been in this situation before.

I am currently in NC's alternative to discipline program and a little over a year into it. I have a BSN and before I entered the alternative program my goal was to eventually become a Nurse practitioner. Now that I have been in recovery I am wanting to really go back. I was just wondering if anyone knows someone or has went back to school while enrolled in a diversion program. I have never had my license disciplined and my narcotic restrictions will be lifeted in a month. If I were to be accepted it would be in my third and final year in the alternative program.

I've been out of nursing since 1999 for writing prescriptions for percocet. I'd like to get back into nursing but the problem is I am being prescribed Methadone and percocet for chronic pain. I am being monitored by pain specialists. Do you think the Board will accept that fact that the medicines are being controlled and not abused. Please help. I want to be a nurse again.

I am a Reg. Nurse from Illinois. I have recently(3 weeks ago) self reported diversion of narcs to my administrator and nurse manager. I was fired on the spot. No EAP offered. That's okay...I need time away from narcs. I have since started my recovery program on my own. I have an appt with a local drug counseling agency for an eval/assessment and have been attending NA meetings. I have wonderfuls support from my family. I heard from a RN friend that a state investigator will come to my home. Is this true? And if so, how long before he/she shows up. I also heard that I should self report to the BON....should I, or should I leave that up to the facility where I was working. I really don't know if they reported me or not. They aren't returning my calls.

Any insight??????
Linda
