Message Board for Nurses in Recovery Web Site
Welcome. This board was created by Karen Tucker to offer a supportive place for Nurses or other Medical Professionals in Recovery and for those seeking relief from addiction and its consequences. Since Karen’s death in 2003, there is a group of us who are interested in keeping Karen’s dream alive, and continue to carry the message. We are very glad that you found us, and we encourage you to share your story, or your questions and comments so that we may get to know you better and in turn share our experience strength and hope with each other. Whether you are currently clean and sober or wish to be, this forum is a great place to start. We would like to ask that you follow a few guidelines of etiquette when you participate on this forum. We encourage you to share what life is like for you clean and sober rather than sharing war stories. A little about what brought you to recovery is welcome! We find we often have similar stories and part of recovery is to find a common ground. While it is understood that there are many ways to recover from addiction, please respect those whose path may have been different from yours. Please remember that some people are triggered by war stories, and drug-a-logs and we ask that you try your best to stay in the solution. We like to focus on recovery rather than addiction. Bashing of any sort will result in being banned from this site. The purpose of this site is for support, not for controversial discussions or debates. If you have a concern that needs immediate feedback please type NEED FEEDBACK or NEED IMMEDIATE FEEDBACK in the subject field. Do not take it personally if you do not get responses to all of your posts, it is the nature of communicating by this medium. Share from your own experience and strength as well as promote hope in others rather than directing others in what they "should" do. Do not make medication suggestions for others. PLEASE remember courtesy when posting. We ask that you refrain from any type of profanity, joking or otherwise. If you have a problem with a state recovery monitoring program or a state board of nursing, please contact that program or board. Do not post your complaint here. Please do not suggest that some do differently than their monitoring program has directed them. Thanks, The NIR Steering Committee ********ATTENTION: This is a public forum. Hello all. Wondering if anyone can give me some light here. I was evaluated and no diagnosis was made, Dr. says he does not consider I have a problem. I have to go to 6 hours of chemical dependence education, and when completed I can return to work. I will not be attending support groups, going to therapy and no restrictions in passing meds. IPN said I will probably have to sign a contract to submit urine samples when requeted and I have no problem with that. Recently I was offered the job of my dreams, I understand that IPN is confidential and that I will not be reported to the board as long as I comply with them. Do I need to let the new job know? I am afraid that they will not hire me after they learn about this.
Any imput will be appreciated.
Thank you

Hello, I'm new to this board and the IPN. I self-referred on Wednesday. I've read alot of posts. It seems like no matter what happens in your evaluation that everyone ends up with pretty much the same treatment plan and length of stay etc.

Here's my story, lost my 33 year old husband 4 years ago to cancer. Made it through that well thankfully. Unfortunately, for the past year I have had a very verbally and physically abusive boyfriend (which has ended thankfully). I was never good enough for him, not skinny enough, not smart enough, only had an ASN not a BSN. I could go on and on. He really hurt my self esteem badly. In January I hurt my back badly and was started on Percocet. I did fine until May when I hurt it again. When I took the pain meds, it took away my physical and emotional pain. I could stop easily, but I always felt better when I took them. I am so shocked at disgusted at myself that I would steal medication. That is not like me. But I have to now live with the consequences of my actions.

Could somebody tell me the average time in FL that one is out of work. My employer states they will sponsor me through the program and that I have safe place to work. My boss is awesome...I don't deserve her kindness.

Any further info on the IPN process would be appreciated...
Thanks,
Sad

Hi Everyone,

I have something rather complicated. I surrendered my nursing lic. in Texas because of opiate addiction in 2005.I was 39 years old and my first time with any drug or any other problems. I entered their peer assisted program, had two positive screens for tramadol, one 9 months in and one 15 months in. I was having some issues with PTSD but didn't know it. My brother was then killed in a car wreck, I got a divorce (because he was an alcholic), this happened right before my 2nd tramadol (brother), I wanted to move to NY, my father was taking it hard, he had throught cancer, but texas would not transfere me to the NY program, said it wasn't comparable. So I surrenderde (dumb I know, but I was wreck and didn't need to be nursing at that point anyway), now here it is, I devoted my self to geting better, have had np positive drug screens in 3 years(my therapist was doing them once a month random),went to meetings, did everything I thought I should. But MO dedied my app. for reinstatement. I am devastated. I am more that ready. I want to fight it but they won't tell me anything on why it was denied. Just stated the nurse practice act on addiction and I couldn't understand any of it. When I called they refused to tell me why. Any advise? I know there is alot of info left out but if you have any questions just ask. Thanks.

Through this site, I found a wonderful site that allowed me to express my angst and sometimes sorrow for being in the RNP. Henny is the site facilitator. I bought a new computer, can't log on to the old one and am having extreme difficulty finding the old site. If anyone has any information, please email me at KMM_2000_1999@yahoo.com or post here.

Thanks,

Kathleen

we are nursing students doing a project on the implications of drug use by nurses. we are hoping someone would be willing to give us an interview describing their story, how they became involved with the substances, the effects it had on your career, and where you are today.

we respect your privacy and will keep your anonymity. this could be a good opportunity to help future nurses avoid the pitfalls you may have fallen into. we are more interested in the reactions of the hospitals or offices you work in, and the state boards. please send an email to us asap.

thank you for your consideration.

Bill W. once told Dr. Vincent Dole (one of the founders of methadone maintenence therapy ) that if a drug existed that worked as well on alcoholics, as methadone works on addicts, he would'nt hesitate to use it.
He knew that abstinence does'nt work.

I am currently attending out pt. therapy at Gateway Allegheny Valley Rehab for Drugs and Alcohol abuse. Itis a Partial hospitalization program. It is Monday thru Friday from 9am to 3:30 pm. For this reason I am encouraged to focus just on my recovery and not to work at this time. So unemployment denied my claim. I must let you know that I did have 15 yrs. of soberity and it was wonderful. I went back out in 2004 because I became to overconfident. I learned this time around that it is harder and takes more effect and don't forget the pain!!

Red wine, my drug of choice, is a controlling factor in my life. I am ready to seek out help, whether from a group or a private counselor. My fear, in reaching out for help, is losing my nursing license. Any suggestions from those who have been there on who to contact, what avenues to go through to prevent being turned in to the nursing board?

I am a nurse involved in the treatment of recovering nurses. How commonly is versed abused by nursing professionals? I can't seem to find any data on it. I would appreciate anecdotal information as well as scientific data.

Hi everyone. I'm a nurse in PA. I'm in the disciplinary monitoring unit or DMU. I was violated in the VRP for violations, not using, thank God and the good people in AA. Anyway, at a meeting I went to tonight, I was referred to this site. If anyone wants to respond who is familiar w/ my situation, I'd really appreciate it. I am currently 3+ years sober and happy, joyous and free! I just got back from an annual AA convention. I have some questions and am glad this type of site is available. Please contact me!
