Message Board for Nurses in Recovery Web Site
Welcome. This board was created by Karen Tucker to offer a supportive place for Nurses or other Medical Professionals in Recovery and for those seeking relief from addiction and its consequences. Since Karen’s death in 2003, there is a group of us who are interested in keeping Karen’s dream alive, and continue to carry the message. We are very glad that you found us, and we encourage you to share your story, or your questions and comments so that we may get to know you better and in turn share our experience strength and hope with each other. Whether you are currently clean and sober or wish to be, this forum is a great place to start. We would like to ask that you follow a few guidelines of etiquette when you participate on this forum. We encourage you to share what life is like for you clean and sober rather than sharing war stories. A little about what brought you to recovery is welcome! We find we often have similar stories and part of recovery is to find a common ground. While it is understood that there are many ways to recover from addiction, please respect those whose path may have been different from yours. Please remember that some people are triggered by war stories, and drug-a-logs and we ask that you try your best to stay in the solution. We like to focus on recovery rather than addiction. Bashing of any sort will result in being banned from this site. The purpose of this site is for support, not for controversial discussions or debates. If you have a concern that needs immediate feedback please type NEED FEEDBACK or NEED IMMEDIATE FEEDBACK in the subject field. Do not take it personally if you do not get responses to all of your posts, it is the nature of communicating by this medium. Share from your own experience and strength as well as promote hope in others rather than directing others in what they "should" do. Do not make medication suggestions for others. PLEASE remember courtesy when posting. We ask that you refrain from any type of profanity, joking or otherwise. If you have a problem with a state recovery monitoring program or a state board of nursing, please contact that program or board. Do not post your complaint here. Please do not suggest that some do differently than their monitoring program has directed them. Thanks, The NIR Steering Committee ********ATTENTION: This is a public forum. I recently got a DUI a year ago and did the eval for the VRP which i know my diagnosis is alcohol abuse. I feel like my mind is spinning just waiting on the paperwork to arrive from the PA BON. Can anyone tell me what to expect? I know in the paperwork it says not to work until approved by the case manager? How long does that take? I want to prepare and feel like I should be looking for another job that does not entail patient contact which is a blow to me because that is why i got into nursing in the first place. Any advice?

HELLO!!!!! My goodness,,, your friend seems to ne in trouble,,, have you ever considered going to Al- Anon???
I lived with 2 practicing addicts in my lifetime- the first took me so low I ended up using- and that ultimately took me to the rooms of N.A.. The second was after 6 yrs clean... he had Bi-polar and could NOT stay clean- no matter what.. eventually I started having cravings for drugs I would never even THINK of using- had using dreams over them... guess what- he had to go... I loved him dearly- but my recovery depended on him going away- and I made it clear that I loved him dearly- But I was working a program and could not/ would not relapse because of this situation,, It really sucks because we are nurses who want to see the best potential in everyone and want to help them.. thats me anyway... I'm sure your friend was a great nurse- likely still would be,, thats not the issue- help her by helping yourself,, taks car of YOU!!!!!

Got reported to the board of nursing in florida and they sent me options for me regarding this incident. One was to give up my license for ever, the second was to join IPN. My hearing is in 3 weeks. Does anyone have any personal experiece with this? Will I still have my license suspended even if I do get accepted into IPN and also what should I bring to this hearing. Thanks for any help.

hI, MY NAME IS PAM. i HAVE BEEN IN RECOVERY 21/2 YEARS. THE PROBLEM IS i DIDNT GO TO TREATMENT UNTIL i LIED TO THE NURSING BOard, failed all programs. When i got out of treatment I went to my hearing without a lawyer, decided to get honest and my liscense was permantly provoked. My dream from childhood was to be a nurse and I was a good one, I went to college with 3 small children[see hoe powerful this disease is] anyway , am prepared and willing to put it all behind me unless there is a thread of hope for my liscense to be restored. I understand it would take a miraclr, but i see miracles in this program daily. Thanks

I am 51. I never drank until I was at my 50th birthday party. I have had depression and anxiety. I left my job one day after a panic attack without telling anyone. I left and went drinking. Someone saw me and reported me to the nursing board for abandoment. I did not take care of patients....thank God. I have chosen to go to a out patient treatment center and surrender my liscience for 3 months to keep out of a formal investigation. I do not take other drugs or chemical. I didnt drink often over the last year but see that by treating my panic attack with alcohol i may have an early problem. I hope I have made the right decision. I wanted to keep my name off the BON website. I didnt drink for 50 years...I know its not that important. Do you think I made the right decision??? Any thoughts?

..Is there anyone else like me out there? I m an RNC with 16 years experience. I had 6 1/2 years clean time and this past September I diverted a Lortab 5mg, eating it and trying to waste a ES Tylenol in the sharps in its place. The CN dug it out of the sharps. I have had cardiac problems since getting popped and my usual BP is 220/140 and that is on 4 diff. antihypertensives and cardiac meds. I don't think I am even physically eligable, last time, I was almost sent home for a BP of 170/98. So mine now is so much worse. I am wondering if I shoud just change my employment? My hubbie is a nsg sup and says he supports me whatever I decide. Any others out there flushing their degree down the toilet??
