She had almost forgiven him! S’peer rejoiced inwardly – but Halzay’s words were like ice down S’peer’s spine. No. She wouldn’t do that. Faranth… Even if Halzay hadn’t meant her suggestion as a threat, that was how the bluerider took it. And if she had him removed from the Weyr, it would be the end as far as he was concerned. He’d never be allowed to go near Sally again. But he relaxed somewhat at her next words – if she had even the slightest hope for him then he had something he could work with. Elaini had been watching him? He’d had no idea. But he’d met her a few times through W’ntyr, so he was aware of her. He would just have to be on his best behaviour when she was around. Even though L’van (whom nobody would ever expect to be so observant) had voiced the idea that her pregnancy was just a little too late – and convenient – to be the bronzerider’s. It was rejected by G’rein and S’peer. But then, L’van was underestimated a lot. He looked so lazy that nobody would really think he was watching them.

A small, affectionate smile crossed his face at the mention of G’rein. “He still is.” S’peer was aware that the greenrider had never had any liking for Halzay after The Flight – but it didn’t seem as if the young man had been rude to her, as S’peer had feared he would be. Though knowing G’rein, he had probably only been nice because he didn’t want to give Halzay another reason to leave. “I’m glad Elaini and W’ntyr are making another go of it.” This was safe ground – it concerned one friend each. At least, he assumed it was safe ground… “W’ntyr’d never leave now. He loves children.”

We’ll just have to let them get on with it. Scarth mused. And how could I forget you? The circumstances following were hardly normal.
