Author: S'peer -- Scarth, Atiyana
Subject: Some people stay far away from the door
In reply to: Halzay(Elizabeth) 's message, "We live like vampires..." on 16:36:58 04/10/06 Mon

“I don’t really know Elaini.” S’peer told Halzay thoughtfully. “W’ntyr and I have been friends for a long time. I think I’d have to take his side.” Or, more to the point, S’peer would have to side with G’rein, who would definitely side with W’ntyr. As would Atiyana. It was all politics. Atiyana herself was mortified that she had brought up the subject of flights in front of the other greenrider – she had no intention of being S’peer’s weyrmate, she just wanted to have her first flight with him so that he could show her how to do it, in a way. Of course, she knew that he hadn’t been in a flight with a female greenrider in four years, but she lived in hope. Being brought up in a Weyr meant that Ati had absorbed the dragonrider tradition of skipping from partner to partner (she and S’peer had been known to take to the same bed more than once, which was why she trusted him for a flight), and she was hardly virginal, so she didn’t fear flights at all. She was rather looking forward to Loriath going into heat.

As Halzay said her piece, Atiyana looked firmly down at the table, wishing she had never come. This would probably be easier for S’peer to handle if he had been alone with Halzay, but Atiyana had to go and put her foot in it as usual…but she was glad that Halzay appeared to be forgiving S’peer. Ati had no idea, of course, that S’peer was grateful for the presence of another person when he was talking to this particular greenrider. As she nodded her understanding of Halzay’s apology to her, she could practically feel S’peer struggling to understand what Elizabeth’s rider had said to him. In wordless comfort she slid one of her calloused hands into his, below the table, squeezing once in a miniature hug before pulling her fingers out of his.

“Thank you.” He said at last, his eyes and the expression of withheld emotion on his face showing that he meant it. “Just…thank you.” With any other greenrider he would have reached over and made some effort to touch them, tactile as he was. But with Halzay he had to content himself with hoping that she could tell just how happy and grateful he was. Halzay was going to let him see his daughter, and S’peer was filled with indescribable joy. He’d never considered having children before, but Sally had changed his life, and now he was desperate to be her father. Even if she didn’t need a father, he wanted to be there for her.

Ati was amazed at the change in S’peer – and, as a girl who had always loved children, she was enchanted by the idea of S’peer having a daughter. “Is that her name, Salzay?” She asked, eyes lit up at the thought. “What’s she like?”

“She’s beautiful.” S’peer replied with a smile in Halzay’s direction. “Just like her mother.”

It helped more than I can say, Elizabeth. Scarth replied, as grateful as his rider was.
