Daniel, I gave this a lot of thought, thinking back to my childhood and practices I have seen in recent times. This is just based on my observations - nothing scientific about it.
I find that the more conservative church going parents spank more, and typically on the bare bottom. The double standard is still very much in effect - boys get it more, and often in front of other females, including older sisters. By the way, I have never seen a child older than 14 get spanked. I don't find specific religions to be a factor - the parents may be Baptist, Catholic, etc. What all the parents have though are conservative values meaning that errant kids are disciplined.
More liberal parents do not spank, or if they do, it might be a couple of swats to a clothed bottom. Having said this though, a very liberal neighbor of ours that does not spank, is extremely casual about nudity, and her 10 year old son skinny dips in front of her in their own pool. I would also add that his boy has behavioral issues, but the mom is hands off and does not discipline him at all - I would be surprised if he becomes successful in life as an adult.
