Believe me, I'm on the same page and certain conditions would have to be met before I would consider doing what asked, and one of those conditions would be me meeting with her mental healthcare team. Yesterday I spent 8 hrs with the young woman and her aunt (my friend). And, no, she did not return to the facility after receiving her pass last weekend. For this I blame my friend but maybe I'm being too harsh. The reasons given for not returning were: deplorable living conditions; 25 women in the house; 5 women per room; no air-conditioning (its been very hot in this part of the U.S.). While I understand the living conditions are not ideal I did try to tell my friend that her niece is not there for physical comfort but for mental health improvement. Long-story-short, I think my friend made a decision based in the heart instead of in the head (and I've been guilty of that many times myself) and that decision may do more harm than good. Based on my own unprofessional observations yesterday I have to question whether the young woman is as serious as she should be in getting-better. My fear is that any improvements that had been made will now be lost and that we'll be back to square-one soon enough. It hurts because I truly care about this young woman, but it also hurts that I may care more about her than she cares about herself. Right now I'm leaning very heavily in the direction of her going back to the facility and continuing therapy and counseling and medications. Thanks again for Your caring and Your advice.
