 That's unfortunate, it was a different time back then, and with the added stress of being a single father it most likely took a toll on him.

I will admit there were times my brother and I didn't feel loved by the man. In truth though he did love us. He feared we would end up like our mother with mental health issues and I think he believed that basically keeping us under his control would somehow stop a mental illness from happening. He also wanted others to see him as no nonsense and strict and I feel that was because he didn't want people to think he was in over his head. God forbid the school or someone called him at work and came to talk to him about our behavior because that meant you were going to get it bad.
