I am also autistic and I understand a lot of what you're saying. I, too, often prefer cartoons; I think it stems from the fact that cartoons often have very exaggerated facial expressions. For many autistic people, it's hard to read in people's faces, we need the "big letters", and that's the cartoons.
I don't have children of my own, but I often take care of my sister's kids, as she lives next door. I use them as an excuse to watch some older things. I'm going through Dr. Slump with the older boy, that's a thing that's 40 years old!
And I have a lot of special interests still. I was never able to finish college, but eventually, I made something of a career with my interest in English (it's not my first language). And I can do some fun geometry things :)
