Great replies guys & gals, thanks!

I saw a lot of school paddlings because they were done in the classroom from Grades 1 - 4, after that - in Middle School (Jr. High) they were primarily administered either out in the hallway or in the principal's office. So while those administered from grades 5 - 12 were out of sight, they were definitely not out of sound...and sometimes it can be even more intriguing when your mind fills in the blanks, like visualizing the paddlings, knowing some girl (or guy...but again, no interest) classmate was bending over grabbing her knees, her butt pushed up in the air and getting spanked with a hardwood paddle.

There was an exception when in 6th Grade we had a very overcrowded class, probably about 45 students. Our teacher was a really young female...very sweet, very smart, an excellent teacher and she didn't really believe in paddling much - but - on this ONE fateful day, she made up for a lot of "missed paddlings."

When we arrived that morning, right away she announced she had a bad case of laryngitis and she could not spend the day calling us down, so she had written assignments that should have kept us busy all day long, on the chalkboard. She said anyone talking without permission or causing any other kind of disruption, she would write their name on a notepad on her desk and at the end of the day, they would be paddled.

I think most of us didn't fully believe her, because it was pretty much out of her character to paddle at all. However, throughout the day if you heard someone whisper to his or her "neighbor" student, she could be seen looking in that direction and then without a word, write something down on a pad on her desk.

Sure enough, about an hour before the final bell, she stood up and spoke for only the second time that day. Holding her pad, she said if she calls your name, you are to come to the front of the class.

She read off names for what seemed like forever! I think ALL of us were on pins and needles, because most of us - me included - HAD whispered something to a nearby classmate. Finally she finished; by that time, there were probably 30 students forming a line that went across the front wall of the classroom, and then part way down one side wall; fortunately for me, I was still sitting. She set down her pad and picked up her paddle.

One-by-one, starting at the beginning of the line, she had the student to face the class, bend over and grab his or her knees, get 3 hard swats and then return to their desk. I remember one girl pretty far back in line became practically hysterical with crying, got out of line and approached the teacher, begging her not to paddle her. The teacher's response was to tell her to get back in line immediately, or she would get worse. I don't recall her name, but the girl was something of a Drama Queen. When she actually got her 3 licks, she screamed like a banshee.

I was imagining all of those little red butts headed out to catch their bus to go home. We referred to it as "The Day of the Mass Paddling."

The most memorable school paddling happened when I was in 10th Grade, heard but not seen as it was out in the hallway, with this ADORABLE girl named Alisa, by our young female English teacher. But that is another story for another time, if there is any interest. Don't want to bore y'all, haha!

Thanks,
JD
