Subject: A bittersweet discovery

I'll try and keep this brief, because I know if I don't, I'll ramble.

Our next door neighbors have a special needs kid, and they regularly get people in to take him on activities, to keep him stimulated, and to give his parents a break. He gets home from school before they get home from work, so someone needs to be there to collect him off the bus, take him to whatever activity, or a bike ride or whatever. One of these 'carers' is a young lady studying to be a nurse, and we see her quite often, she's come with him when he's wanted to visit, and so it's pleasant company a couple of times a month. It didn't start off that way, we met this young lady a couple of times over the previous years, when the kid (I don't want to use names, obviously), decided he wanted to visit, for soft drink and biscuits, but these visits have occurred more frequently as he's gotten more comfortable with us here, he often invites himself, which is fine, but sometimes if he drops in after school, his 'carer' is usually with him, and lately, now that school is back in, it's become a regular thing.

Now this young lady, is actually a really nice person, exotic looks, and twenty-odd years younger than me, and quite attractive, which is nice, but her and I get along quite well, she's easy to talk to, usually I find conversations with other people awkward, she's a rare exception, and I say I'd consider her a friend, well at least we're on friendly terms.

Now even if I were a younger man, I've got nothing going for me in the looks department, so I wouldn't even try my luck, I don't want to suffer that particular humiliation, and wreck the friendship, the thought has crossed my mind, but I know I'm a bore, so I know I'd have no chance in hell, and I may well be old enough to be her father, so no.

What I have done though, is wonder what she'd look like with cigarette in hand, nice, but still no.

So anyway, I was out the front this afternoon putting the bins out for tomorrow's collection when who should come along, than kid and 'carer', so a conversation happens, starting off with the usual pleasantries.

When I noticed something.

In her hand, along with her car keys, was a pack of smokes.

AWW YEAH!

I honestly had no idea she was a smoker, so that kind of made my day.

So I took a mental snapshot and filed it away, I didn't catch the brand, but I suspect they were Menthols, and she must be a light smoker, as my nose would have alerted me to the distinctive fragrance.

Anyway, she recently got a puppy, and we got talking about that, and then she dropped something of a bombshell, the pup slept between her and her boyfriend last night, but she named her BF, and it was a name and person I knew, have known for years, our next door neighbour's eldest son, who is currently living back at home, next door.

So damn, she's spoken for, so that's that, even if I had of had a remote chance.

But…it does mean I'll be seeing her a lot more often. And if a particular confluence of circumstances should occur, I might get to see her light up and/or smoke.

Just I've oft lamented at least to myself, on reading real stories or fictions of blokes hitting it off with stunners who also happen to be smokers, and "why don't I know any women like that?", well, now I do, and she's spoken for, and I'm too old.

And that isn't the first time.

Back when I was a teenager our neighbours a couple of doors up (now both long deceased), had a son who hooked up with and married a model, I expect this lady was in her late thirties or so, was gorgeous, had a stunning personality, and was a rather heavy smoker, 40+ a day by my estimation, and she knew how to smoke and looked really good doing it, obviously, and was someone who a teenage me did entertain fantasies of. Turns out the relationship soured, and a divorce happened, but since she was on really good terms with her ex-hubbies parents, she still used to visit, and so she and I still got to interact, by this time I'd hit my early 20s, and had actually given serious thought to testing the waters, but she stopped coming around, and anyway, she would have been in her 40s or 50s by that time. So I would have been too young for her in any case.

Damned either way I guess.

But hey, does at least the first part count as a sighting?
