Subject: push vs. pull - ad nauseum

Chaz says:
>Pulling is the same motion as throwing a sack of potatos on >the back of a pickup truck, while pushing is the same a >chopping a log laying on the ground.
>
>These are not difficult concepts to grasp, yet they are >completely different from each other as far as mechanics go >and how they should be taught!

Chaz, they're different/important/appropriate for YOU - possibly other people, too - but push/pull is absolutely NOT an important/necessary concept to learning the swing. I can easily imagine "pulling" (most people would call it "slinging") that sack of potatos onto the back of the truck, but I can just as easily imagine "pushing" (i.e. "throwing") it onto the same truck.

The same goes for the log on the ground. I can "pull" or "push" the axe into the log.

Truth be known, you could take most anyone and video them throwing that sack of potatoes or swinging that ax. In one case tell them to "push" the sack/axe and in the other tell the to "pull" the sack/axe. Compare the videos and the axe swings would be virtually identical to each other while the sack throws would also be identical to each other.

I have experienced this very thing. Last year while learning NG I went through about 9 months of up and down success and failure while experimenting with just such swing thoughts. While recuperating from my knee surgery I reviewed the swings I'd video'd throughout that 9 month period - each video was 6-8 weeks apart and I'd never reviewed them all at once. Guess what? Regardless of my swing thought/emphasis (always an NG swing) there just was very tiny visible differences in the swing.

Again, this whole "push/pull" thing is like trying to tell someone what the color "red" is. You can just never be certain that what I see as "red" is what you see as "red". The problem w/ the push/pull devotees is that they have had a personal epiphany and have seen what is, in their eyes, the "truth". People who have a very clear vision of something have a difficult time understanding that their vision is not an absolute to anyone else.
