I have just gone through a very bad period of shanking - the ball goes off the the right at a 45 deg angle. This happened, not all the time, but often to my clubs from 8, 9 and my wedges. At first, I thought it was caused by my club face being open. But seeing a mark on one of my clubs on the hosel, I concluded that it was my swing path that was causing my problems. I changed my set up and that seemed to cure the problem, at least for now.

What I did was after setting up in the usual way, ensuring I was properly distanced from the ball, I placed my hands body centered but with the clubhead set up on an inside path for the backswing. My normal take away is straight back and I think that I was actually taking it back to the outside. As a result of this adjustment on the last two holes of my 18 yesterday, I hit all my short clubs the way they are supposed to be hit on the last two holes.

So check the distance you are from the ball; but also look at the path your clubhead takes when you begin the backswing.
