I agree with Southend. Walter Harrison is committed to athletics.Huge difference from our last President.I actually e-mail him about twice a year.Once a year I give him a synopsis of what I felt were the strengths and weaknesses of the previous basketball season(concentrating on marketing efforts, new ideas tried,etc.).He always writes back a detailed e-mail regarding my e-mail.One time I e-mailed him regarding some ideas I had about the program and he forwarded it down to everybody.I must have rec'd a dozen e-mails from various people in the organization to follow up.Even at midnight madness there was a faculty/student b'ball game and Walter Harrison was the starting point guard(albeit his athletic talent can be questioned).

BearcatFan: I'm not sure I agree with your assessment about the presidents of the league members either. Were you suggesting that Binghamton's president hasn't been supportive or was your comment directed toward others?

On the subject of Binghamton's president, Lois DeFleur, I would note that she strongly supported the notion of moving our athletic program up from DIII to DI at a time when most profs and interested parties on campus were vehemently against it and the student body was, to be blunt, apathetic at best. In less than ten years, we've not only moved up to DI and into what I believe is a great conference for us, but most of our teams have been quite competitive from day one. Moreover, we're opening a brand new $30M+ arena next year that will seat 6,000 for basketball. None of this would've happened without DeFleur's leadership and support (along with that of our AD, Joel Thirer).

As for the AE commish, I don't really know enough to comment meaningfully on the specific criticisms I've seen posted -- but I would say that if he's not prepared to be aggressive in either resolving the issues that are driving NU and perhaps others to consider leaving or encouraging their departure so that we can invite in new, more enthusiastic members to join in their places, then we should probably get someone else to do the job. What the conference doesn't need are constant rumors about schools wanting to leave overshadowing all of the good things about the conference.
