Subject: Tony Chatman to Visit Hartford

Chatman is a 5'11 point guard currently at New Hampton School. He graduated from powerhouse Charlestown High and started alongside Alray Taylor, Cori Boston, and Rashid Al-Kaleem.

Rivals is reporting that Hartford is interested and he will most likely visit after the season ends. Wisc-Green Bay and Boise St. are the other schools currently showing the most interest.

My friend who played at Charlestown with Anthony said that Chatman won't attend Hartford if NU defects and we happen to lose the automatic NCAA bid.

This will become the preferred recruiting technique for NU and anyone competing with an AE team for a recruit. If Commissioner Monasch wants to continue to receive a paycheck, he ought to go to the NCAA right now and secure a waiver so that the other 8 (or 9 including UMBC) schools are not held hostage by NU. The way things sit now, even if NU has no intention of leaving (and remember their spokeman saying it was much ado about nothing and even our pal, NU Hoop Fan saying it was infeasible, until taking up the mantra this week) just their planting the hint gives them a tremendous recruiting advantage if they and another AE team are talking to the same player, including high school underclassmen. Mr. Commissioner, focus all your energy on securing the automatic bid for your constituents, and call NU's bluff. Your constituents will be greatful and your respect will be second to none.

Can anyone give me the odds on NU actually leaving for the CAA? Should we really be that worried?

While I agree that this conference has a lot of problems, I agree with a lot of posters in that NU would just be shooting themselves in the foot if they went to the CAA.

[> [> [> [> Bye Bye America East -- Ghost of Stu Haskel, 21:42:17 02/21/03 Fri

After 15 years of losing, NU is paying back America East having not been able to turn around a program in disarray, plaqued by corruption and a lack of fan base. By holding the other programs hostage, NU gains a recruiting advantage. Whether they go or stay, they will be tournament eligible. All other AE programs must now wait for the NCAA waiver while recruits decide to go elsewhere.

A desperate and passive agressive move on the part of the WORST program in America East.

Its time for them to go and take their cheating and losing ways to the CAA.

What was stated previously by the Hawk might be true and might not be.Do remember that GCG exposed the hawk as having multiple personalities(Bearcat barry, stonybrook sandy, coach wells, hawkahauntus, etc). While he might be acurate on some of his posts I for one can not believe him as he seems to have a "I hate NU" agenda.

That being said, the administration at Hartford is quite concerned about the possible defection. However no offer has even been made at this point in time(the CAA presidents will have to take a vote).I'm not sure that the non-football members of the CAA are going to feel nearly as strongly about this move as the football members will. The Hartford people tried to tell me that when NU takes a look at the numbers (higher costs involved) they might have second thoughts.I don't see this rational as NU had previously voted yes to the 16 team merger.I can't wait to find out what happened at today's President meeting.I'll certainly know more after Hartford's home game on Wednesday against UVM.

One thing people seem to keep forgetting here, NU's rumored "offer" from the CAA is HIGHLY contingent on the College of Charleston accepting a bid as well. The CAA isn't going to go with an 11 team league, and I don't know what the CofC is thinking. No one really has mentioned anything about that.

No one in the NU athletic department indicated they had heard of anything coming from the meetings at 6 pm last night.

As for a CAA vote, from what I've been reading on the CAAZone board, none of the fans are really for it, except for some folks from JMU. In the court of public opinion this proposed CAA expansion has no popular support.

If I hear anything, I'll let you know.

As for NU keeping the rest of the league hostage, come on, it's overrated.

I've got a great idea for a promotion. Suntan night. The fan who comes to the game with a tan as dark as Chris Monasch's wins a trip to Jamaica or something...

My understanding is that there is no "offer" yet and that CAA has not even taken their vote on whether or not they want to expand.
