I assume you are saying that their strength of schedule did them in for an NCAA bid. They didn't play as tough a schedule as usual, however how about the rest of the league? Have you looked at everyone's won/lost record, especially out of conference? They are as follows (before AE tourney results):

Albany 9-18 overall, 5-6 non-conference
Binghamton 10-16 overall, 4-6 non-conference
Boston Univ. 13-14 overall, 3-8 non-conference
Hartford 7-20 overall, 2-9 non-conference
Maine 23-4 overall, 7-4 non-conference
Northeastern 8-19 overall, 2-9 non-conference
UNH 12-15 overall, 5-6 non-conference
Stony Brook 9-18 overall, 2-9 non-conference
Vermont 20-7 overall, 8-3 non-conference

There you have it...it's hard to have a high strength of schedule when 16 of your games are going to be played against teams with those records. Seeing opponents records count as 50% of the RPI, there's no question that these overall records helped to pull down Maine's RPI. This was also a huge reason why the conference's RPI went down to #23 this year. So, you can't just say Maine needs to pick up their schedule, the rest of the league needs to win some non-conference games and stop losing to Quinnipiac, Wagner, Sacred Heart, Marist, Cornell, Canisius, Wright State among others.

Let's hope Maine can beat Creighton and move through the WNIT field. I see that should they win, they will play either Siena or Seton Hall. Good luck.

Maine's non-conference schedule will be greatly improved for 2003-2004. It includes:

Washington
Hawaii
Indiana
Wisconsin-Green Bay
SMU
Drake

The rest of the conference needs to start winning too, as you said.

Maine will be the overwhelming favorite next year. My pre-season picks:

1. Maine
2. Boston U
3. Vermont
4. Hartford
5. UNH
6. Albany
7. Northeastern
8. Binghamton
9. Stony Brook

BU gets Bonner from Stanford eligible. Maine is no lock next year. BU is going to be very dangerous and seems to be building a program to rival the conference powers Vermont and Maine.

True, but McKeon needs to prove she can coach this talent to an above .500 season. Versyp has already proven her coaching ability going 18-1 in the league this season, and Maine returns everyone as well. They also add 3 freshmen who will be able to step in and contribute right away. I wouldn't be surprised if Maine and Boston U only lost to each other next season in the conference. Everyone needs to win more non-conference games though.

BU was above .500 last year. Vanderbilt is not Dartmouth. the non-conference schdeules were drastically different for those teams. BU has not had a full slate of healthy players for most of the season, two going on to get surgery during the season. I agree that BU and Maine should be the top 2 teams for next season and that teams need to win more games next year. Maine is far ahead of BU in terms of its tradition and fan support. There were many Black Bear fans at Hartford on Saturday. BU is just deveopling a program. Maine has been winning since current Stony Brook coach, Trish Roberts, was on the sidelines. Chris Basil left the cupboard empty.
The question is where does Vermont fit in next season?

Actually, Maine has been winning since the days of Coach Gavitt in the mid 1980's. Vermont should be fighting for 3rd place next season with Hartford and UNH. However, they could sink as low as 6th depending on team chemistry and injuries.

If you read the transcrpit from Cheryl Marra's chat on ESPN, Maine's SOS was a factor. I agree that it was a down year for the AE. The fact that some AE schools play no one in the nonconference does not help. The ship floats or sinks together. The A10 roared back after finishing behind the AE in total rpi last season. UMASS winning at Nova, URI beating Maryland and GW losing at Tenn. all help. Maine and Vermont have traditionally buttressed the league with their tough schedules and by getting a few good w's along the way.
Hartford and Boston U are the only other schools that play anyone. The 2 bid days are long gone until a talent and schdule upgrade comes. BU did sign Miss Basketball from Wisconsin.

I wouldn't say that 2 bids are long gone, we just need to win more quality non-conference wins. Maine and Boston University should both be top 100 in the RPI next season, Vermont top 150, and hopefully Hartford, UNH and Albany will be top 100-200 also.

UNH is going to be needing some guard play, but by returning their top three scorers, including 1st Team All Conference Maren Matthias, they should help in getting some out of conference wins, while fighting for one of the top four spots in the Conference.

UNH will still be losing 33% of its scoring to graduation.

Of course, Vermont will graduate almost 40% of its
scoring in Hall and Cressman. A good frosh or two plus
current player improvement will be necessary for both
teams to compete in what SHOULD be a stronger league
next year.
