Great season by UVM and a good win over Hartford. UVM plays controlled and fundamental basketball. UVM exceeded expectations this year and look for them to be everyone's conference favorite next year with Sorrentine back.

Hey, Will, I agree that Vermont should be the preseason favorite next year. But a word to the wise, don't be so quick to write off BU.

With 3 All Conference players returning and 4 or 5 others add a walk on who could probably be the best in the league and then maybe they can NU will have enough talent to compete for the title!!!!

Looking forward to watching the final on Sat as either team should represent the conference well in the tourney. Vermont has terrific fans who travel well and it would be great to see them get their first NCAA bid.

I agree that no one should discount BU next year. Depending on the outcome of the next game (i.e., if BU should win), I have to agree that BU will challenge again for preseason #1. BU loses only 2 impact seniors (albiet good ones), one of whom (Seymour) wasn't really a huge factor the previous 2 years. Collins is a super player, but I think most people will agree that his better year was last year. Between them we lose just 18 points a game. It's not like BU has to make up half of its scoring -- or even a third -- to be competitive next season.

My point is, Bell, Carr, Turner, Fitzgerald, Butt and Grochowalski all return (that's about 47 of the 68 points a game that they average). Then we have Gardner, Wynn and Czaplinski (another 4-5 points a game in limited minutes this year). I really like Gardner, and I can almost guarantee that all three will up their averages next season, as well as the 6 upper classsmen.

I am very optomistic about next season and predict (you heard it here first!) that they may even surpass their success of this year. Bell has come on strong the last part of the season and can be expected to have even more of an impact next year. Carr had a sub par (for him) year, and I expect he will overcome this and put up better numbers next year. Grochowalski (in less than 20 minutes a game) averages almost 5 rebounds and more than 8 points a game -- if he is moved to the 3 (his natural position), he can lessen the void that BU's current graduating small forwards (Seymour and Collins) make, while possibly getting more minutes (now he scratches minutes from Butt & Bell in the 4 and 5 -- where at 6'6" he plays out of position) and therefore scoring and rebounding more.

In addition, all of these kids have experience playing in big games (the older kids in the NCAAs against Cincinnatti last year, and all of them against the likes of Stanford, Arizona, BC and Florida State this year).

As regards UVM, I don't think Vermont fans realize how important Grant Anderson is to their team. I appreciate Coppenrath's and Sorrentine's value, but I think Anderson is the real glue -- he does a little of everything and does it well -- similar to Collins' role at BU. He will surely be missed. Add to that the layoff Sorrentine has had and the team's lack of playing against really big competition. Also, add the number of new players coming in, and team chemistry may take time to gell. I don't think they are a lock for preseason #1 at all.

I think these two teams (BU and UVM) have an equal shot to be preseason #1 next year, with a slight edge going to the team who wins on Saturday. Then, of course, there's the rest of the league. It'll be a real horse race next season, make no mistake. I fear NU and Bing U alot. If one or two impact freshmen emerge next season it could (literally) be a whole new ball game.
