Subject: Player of the Year Projections

I think history may be made this year...Wilson POY and ROY. If not, my vote goes to Coppenrath for POY and Wilson is definitely the ROY. Parker (Hartford) is a close second.

Coppenrath (POW) and Wilson (ROW). They would never give both to one player - just isn't good PR business. Besides, as good as Wilson is, I've got a problem with anyone from a bad team (record-wise) taking home the top honor. It's just not right. Coppenrath, though his numbers are down a bit of late, is still the class of the league.

Coppenrath, VT - early favorite - slumping as of late - not a good rebounder for his size.

Bell, BU - he's been BU's saving grace this year on a real deep team.

Green, Bing - not a good shooting % but he's a winner.

White, ME - very efficient player.

The choice isn't as clear as it was 3 weeks ago!!!!!

Robinson would have been on my list but he was injured.

It's got to go to Coppenrath no doubt.

Why, no doubt - he's a scorer only shoots 44%, not a great passer, not an outstanding rebounder especially for his size, and very rarely does he draw a serious defensive assignment.

I think he's the favorite but the way he's finishing the season the last two games can hurt him. I believe there's a doubt.

He could have a tough one against Hartford, Albany should be easy.

Is this award given before the EOY Tournament?

I only saw BU once this season, and Bell was a major factor in the game vs. UNH as was Billy Collins. Has he consistently been a big factor in most league games? More games than Collins?

Has any one guy been "the deciding factor" significantly more often than others at Maine, Bing, Stony, NU or Hartford?

I know tradition says this award goes to a top team, if not the number one team, but I like to be non-traditional and pick the best player. But in all honesty, I haven't seen enough games to make a great choice and reading statistics and box scores can be VERY misleading! Doesn't say whether the points and rebounds came while the game was on the line or after it had been decided.

In person or on TV I think I've seen a dozen or so games this season. I've read the forum and the AE web site all season and it is still very difficult, especially with how balanced most of the teams are.

Based on that, I'll say that Coppenrath regardless of his stats has been reported as the deciding factor in a significant number of games. Probably more than either Collins or Bell (just too much depth at BU) for BU. My perception is that no one at the schools in the middle of the pack will match Taylor's number of times as "player of the game". And I agree that Robinson with a couple of big games can get right back in this mix.

Best performances I've seen in person:
Johnson - Albany
Wilson - Albany
Robinson - NU
Berea - NU
Parker - Hartford
Cook - Hartford
Reed - Maine
White - Maine
Collins - BU
Bell - BU

Haven't seen UVM, Stony Brook or Bing in person so I can't comment, but obviously a few more would join this list.

The big question is whether this list would be similar for the majority of the posters who've seen games? It does look a lot like the makings of an all-league team!

America East bylaws state a player can't win two major awards in one season. Four players are up for POTY: Rashad Bell, Jerell Parker, Syl Robinson, and Taylor Coppenrath. Coaches are asked to submit players from their teams worthy of the major awards. These are the only four who made the cut. Wilson isn't on the list because he's on the Rookie of the Year list. There are five players on that list: Wilson, Aaron Cook, Kevin Reed, Shejdie Childs, Jose Juan Barea

Did not know that...thanks for the info. It is unfortunate that "bylaws" like this exist. It takes away well-deserved honors b/c higher-ups want to save face. They may have to reevaluate this one after this year. Wilson should be ROY AND POY!

Trey, I must restate my firm belief that Wilson, despite his numbers and obvious all-star caliber, CANNOT be Player of the Year (even if it were allowed). Any player who plays for a team that wins less than 20% of its conference games simply can't be awarded as the best in the conference. No offense to Wilson, but it would be a bizarre scene. He benefits from being the best player on a poor team - therefore he gets more FGA than other candidates (thereby padding stats). Put him on any other team in the league (except UNH!!) and his numbers are down. Don't get me wrong - he's outstanding, but unless he's averaging 30 a game, or is the next Reggie Lewis, he doesn't win it while Albany is miles from respectability.

I agree Wilson does not deserve POY but I do disagree with the statement about getting more FGA. Please be aware the strength of Wilson is his efficiency if he were a bomber I would agree with you but being he draws so much defensive attention ( Box & 1 and doubled very often) it's amazing he has shot 53% from the floor and gets very few easy looks.
Again I do realize and appreciate that you state he is a fine player. Hopefully he will be for Albany what Speedy Claxton was for Hofstra. I'm not saying he's as good as Speedy but I think he's as good as Speedy was as a Freshman and that is damn good.
