My theory is simply that spanking works and is the best punishment for children. It is the traditional method for that reason and my own experience tell me the same.

I most recently put my theory into practice on Sunday when I caught my grandson riding his bike without his helmet on.
Now he knows the rules and has been told about this previously, so a spanking was clearly necessary. I put him over my knee and soundly tanned his bare bottom with my slipper.

Did the spanking work? Well he was a very sore and sorry boy by the time I was through with him. He's now been punished and reminded that following my rules is not optional and was quickly able to play on his bike again. This time with his helmet on. I consider it a job well done.
