I feel that is one of those "tricky" times when the spank/don't spank dilemma could go either way.

IF your soon knew that you meant the he couldn't ride a bike - AT ALL - for a month, then he certainly defied you and deserved a harsh spanking.

Ask yourself, did I make it plain that he couldn't ride ANY bike? You spanked him for not wearing a helmet, so he did learn THAT lesson. There is a distinct difference between "his bike" and "ANY bike". From this point forward, he knows that he is forbidden from riding ANY bike. In the future you will just have to be more explicit about your punishments. Teenagers can be get very legalistic about rules and punishments.
