If Jack was getting an attitude or arguing about something too much, I would say quietly "Do we need to talk about this at bedtime?"

This gave him a chance to back down, and he would often say "No, sorry Mum."

But sometimes be said "Dunno" and that was a sign that I might end up talking to his bare bottom with the back of my special hairbrush.
