Subject: Jack (aged 10) on grounding and spanking

I was thinking this morning about the walks Jack and I used to on Sundays. I found he would talk to me much more if he was free to run about than if I sat him down, when he would just squirm and want to get away as soon as possible.

One day when he must have been 10 or so he was telling me about one of his friends who had been grounded and how terrible it was. Jack listed all the things he couldn't do and got quite passionate about it, waving his arms about.

When I asked Jack if he thought it was better to be spanked, he went all coy with me and didn't want to answer. But if he was 10 it was probably not long since he had been spanked so he didn't want to give me any encouragement to apply the back of the hairbrush to his bare bottom again.

I never got the impression Jack resented being spanked, not least because he was happy to make jokes about it. I have told the story before about him getting his first hairbrush spanking after treading mud into the house - the spanking was not for the mud but for ignoring lots of reminders. If I ever said "Don't forget to wipe your feet" after that he would rub his bottom in an exaggerated way and say "I remember!"

He tended to avoid discussions of spanking, though he did tell my father in a matter of fact way that he was spanked with the hairbrush "now I'm a big boy". He was 8 - practically grown up! Like the jokes, that suggested to me that he didn't find spanking too terrible, even though the brush obviously stung a whole lot more than my hand.

What did other mothers find? Were your boys pleased they were spanked and not punished in some other way? Did they ever talk about spanking?
