Good for you in the way you handled your daughter. In my State I wouldn't chance even giving bare swats in a bathroom out of the house and I certainly won't spank away from home. I have gone through this with my 3 but not my daughter since she was Breanna's age, my boys have often as with my 11 year old not long ago.

We went to our local market for a few groceries and as I stopped to have a quick chat with a friend he got rude and disrespectful because we were taking too long, he wanted to go and was being a brat. He was spanked when we got home.
