I have found with boys, including my son Jason and now with Andy, that bedtime just has seemed to remain to be an issue for them even into their teens. Like your Joseph, I have also have to spank them for throwing a tantrum, even in their teens, when not wanting to go to bed! Maria, the boys do get better, but just don't seem to fully learn, so Mommy/Mamma need to spank, and spank again, until they do. Eventually my son Jason learned, as will Andy and your Joseph as well as your nephew. Maria, both Andy and Derek are 'my boys'. I have called them as such many times. Especially with Andy as he is as close as a son he can be without coming from my womb or not being adopted. But Andy has called me Mom (and Mommy when he was younger) all the time for many years now and Derek calls me Mom often. Besides when I am spanking him, which then he wails Mommy (They both do!). As I expected, both boys argued the next morning during breakfast whose bottom looked worse (after already arguing extensively downstairs when waking up). When my daughter asked them if they wanted judges to make the final, expert decision, they both looked at her blankly. And then when they finally realized what she was getting at, they both responded with a resounding "NO WAY!" The rest of us laughed.
