I can't really of anything that has surprised me during an actual spanking. I would say my biggest surprise was having to spank my younger two daughters 3 times over the course of 2 months in 2020 during COVID. I thought they had gotten to a point where their spankings were done or would be rare, but then my lap had a flurry of activity over 6 weeks or so.

My younger daughters (21 and 19 at the time) were both in college and came home when their campus closed not knowing that they wouldn't be going back until the following fall. They had a bit of a rough time adjusting to suddenly living at home with more rules and structure than they had at school without much warning. As such, they pushed the boundaries and eventually earned spankings for arguing about going to meet up with friends (both of them) and arguing about doing chores (my then 19yo). After those 3 spankings, they eventually adjusted and realized that it would be in their best interests to behave and they were generally well behaved afterwards with no more spankings needed (they did get cornertime, swats, warnings, etc. at times though).
