I used to worry so much about Jack - it seems silly now - and read every article about raising children I could find. They all said that the best sign for future educational achievement was if a child read for pleasure.

On one of our walks I said to him that if there was something he really wanted to do then he should tell me. There are a lot of hours in the day and it should be possible to do what he wanted and what I expected of him. I do think boys need organising more than girls, so I did remind him about his jobs and encouraged him to make lists like I did.

It worked for the most part, and when it didn't there was still my special hairbrush in the drawer.
