My little boy is 10, when he goes over my lap my thighs are slightly separated and lays over them. I have my left hand wrapped around his waist with my arm resting on his back his hands out front holding a stuffed animal or pillow at the start, he will though reach back with his right hand and I will take hold of the back of his upper arm keeping his arm at his side and hand out of the way with my elbow forearm pressing on his back while his left hand is busy.
