Mine are 10 and 13 so we aren't nearly as far into the journey as you though some behavior seem to be the same no matter the age of the child!

It actually reminds me of the movie Jurassic Park where he talked about the raptors testing the fence for weak points. My 10 year old especially will just keep pushing and pushing and pushing until he crosses the line and has to be punished. Then he is good for several weeks until he starts testing again. Rather than being satisfied with where the boundaries are when he is warned he always has to find out exactly where they are by stepping right over them and going to far.
Although she is 20 it sure sounds like your daughter is doing the same thing right now just to see how much she can get away with and she won't be satisfied until she steps at least one step too far and gets a red hot bottom and a few welts/bruises as a result.
