Your story is similar to what happened to me just yesterday. While grocery shopping, I ran into the 5th grade teacher of a couple of my daughters who both they and I loved. During our conversation, she voiced her frustration with her own teenagers who have been home from school and asked if I had any secrets after successfully making it to the "other side" of the teen years. I told her that the most important thing is to love them and to remember that they won't be this way forever as they mature. However, I'm wondering I should have been more specific and also mentioned how I believe consistent discipline (including spanking) helped my daughters. As a teacher, I am sure she is not a pushover herself by any means :).

As we talked, I invited her over for coffee on Saturday morning as she said that she loves to see her former students as they get older so I am thinking about bringing it up then (probably not in front of my daughters), but I am still thinking about it.

Good for you though and glad to her that the other mom was receptive to it.
