That is such an important point. The question isn't "is he crying," it's "is he ready to learn." Screaming and kicking and fake-tears mean he is fighting it. The opening part of the spanking is to break down defiance. It's the next few swats after he gives in that teach the lesson.

For a young or sensitive child, it may be that he is receptive from the start. So maybe Doris doesn't have to worry much about it. But if a tween or teen gets spanked there's probably always going to be stubbornness to cut through at the start.
