Subject: Reducing entry fee is not really a good thing, you will lose future gains. Keep to the average in the region. Sashes for all cheapens the placements for the podium placers. Great to win a sash, but really? In the end, a sash for 22nd and the same for second? What happened to earning a sash?
In reply to:
's message, "Would you rather have cheaper entry fees for a feis with simple awards (candy/ribbons/etc) or do you like paying the higher price for the sashes and trophies?" on 19:07:46 07/03/18 Tue
At one time, sashes were only given at the O's, no other feis gave them out, reserving the honor of achievement of a sash for the O's (and of course, NANS, etc).
One feis began to award sashes in addition to a trophy/award for podium placers, then it spread.
Now, so many feiseanna hand out sashes for all placers, with no other distinction (Placement). Sashes come cheap when ordered in bulk, a feis makes more money that way; they order the printed ones, all one-colour, and there's no year, so what's left over goes to the next year. Ordered in bulk, that's about $2.75 a sash, depending on where it is ordered from (some places are even less).
There's no difference really, between first place and the last one in the placements; except a photo of standing on a box. While it's exciting to get that first sash, after awhile, it becomes less than exciting and minimized, when it occurs feis after feis. Even top podium dancers start to limit going to feiseanna.
If going to the all sash awards, make a distinction between the podium placers with maybe something that represents the feis or school. Let the podium placers know their efforts are recognized. Perpetual trophies, with a nice replacement (crystal, etc) are really great motivators for many.
There are many feiseanna that are losing entries because of their offerings and other feiseanna are gaining because of what they offer in the way of awards for the competitors. People want a better return on their investment. Think out of the box for awards, be original and unique. Don't cheapen this any more than it is.
To the OP, please don't reduce your fees and then lessen awards; you might see an increase of entries the first year; however, down the line? That's what you have to think of.
