Subject: Digger Phelps re: mid-major at-large bids to NCAA's this year.

Been busy with work and finally got a chance to post a little. Caught Digger, Katz and Ravich on ESPN sometime late last week. Katz was saying the Big East would be fortunate to get 3 teams in the NCAA, he said there was no way they would get 4 - assuming no upsets in the BE tourney. Phelps nearly fell off his chair. Katz made point after point about how the BE is just going to fall short of 4 teams. Phelps pretty much scolded Katz for ripping a major conference. Phelps said that this is not the year to be a 25-5 mid-major that loses a conference tourney - because this is the first year of the big money tv deal with the tournament. Phelps said that no way would the NCAA allow teams from major conferences miss out on the big money. Phelps guaranteed 5 teams from the BE. Katz told Phelp's that the NCAA isn't the one that chooses the teams, it's the committee. Phelps countered that with, "Don't think the committee has any say in which teams go. There is a lot behind the scenes that you have no clue about." I couldn't believe, well actually I could, that Phelp's would rip Katz like that - while also adding in that the selection committee is just a facade. It was a total "What do you know? I'm a former coach with plenty of contacts. Keep your mouth shut, Andy, about things you don't know about."

Anyone else see this? My recollection isn't verbatim, but you get the gist. It will be interesting to see how many 17-12 majors get the nod over the 25-5 mid-majors.

I'm not a big Katz fan - I get a kick out of how he, and a bunch of other people, make their living. Phelps, on the other hand, proved to me what a good 'ol boy he really is. You think he'd remember his roots.
