Subject: To Czar...re: Marlon Smith and Japhet McNeil

Czar- Marlon Smith doesn't have very much on the table right now. He hasn't had a very good senior year. I agree that his talents are more suited to a more up-tempo type of game, and that he's not as good in the halfcourt. But I don't think you realize how his stock has slipped. He might be capable of playing in the A-10, and I like him, but the recruiters aren't beating his door down right now. Looks like he could wind up in the MAAC or even *gasp* the America East. We'll see.

McNeil's stock, on the other hand, seems to be rising. Hofstra is not involved with him. Schools like Siena, Canisius, Hartford, Binghamton, St. Peter's, and Bradley are. Smith is definitely more explosive than McNeil, but what McNeil does, he does well. He distributes it really well and can pass the hell out of the ball. Smith and McNeil are two different types of point guards, in many ways, with Marlon being the scoring point and Japhet the conventional distributing-type. It has definitely been interesting to see how each player's stock has been affected during the high school season, however. Especially with the great summer Smith had.
