Neither. Just someone who isn't a biased, know-little fan.
Guys like the Buffalo columnist are professionals who spend their working life getting inside insight into situations exactly like the one the columnist in particular wrote about. Guys like you pay your money to get into games and know next to nothing about what goes on except what you see on the court. From that limited amount of information, guys like you make inexact and, from reading this board, often inaccurate, suppositions. I'd say the columnist in question knows a ton more about what he's writing about than, probably, almost everyone on these type of boards combined. The guy wrote a column that was slanted very favorably toward coach Lanier. It appears, considering coach Lanier's background and the tone of the column, that the columnist has known coach Lanier for a significant amount of time, and definitely long before coach Lanier ever came to Siena. It appears that the columnis seemed to have known coach Lanier back to the days when Lanier was playing at St. Bonaventure. I would say that anyone who appreciates the type inside information a relationship like that can help deliver, would "appreciate the takes" of the "author" in question. By the way, I'm sure the columnist's mom also appreciated them. And, I did, too. So that makes three of us, at least.
