In reply to: le 's message, "More regional appeal---tradition----interest" on Tuesday, July 15, 03:03:00pm

Nothing personal - I'm shooting the message and NOT the messenger -

" Seriously, do you really think we couldn't play with SU on a regular basis? "

Outside of a HOF Coach, vastly better athletes annually and 10-deep on the bench....sure.

" I am serious, I think we can but feel playing on s regular basis is key. "

STOP RIGHT THERE....Syracuse has ZERO interest in playing Niagara annually !

" Under that condition NU’s “story” is enhanced and athletes, IMO, would find NU a more attractive place to play. "

HOW in God's green earth is getting wacked annually by a vastly superior MAJOR program going to enhance NU's position as a mid-major program ??? You think that is somehow APPEALING ?

" A one year deal will not work; however, play them for 10 years straight and I believe the game becomes a solid athletic investment. "

No comment....other than a 1-year game at the Dome gets NU a much needed GUARANTEE check for $50,000.

" Re the 15,000 fans that watched SU play Canisius, does it matter who they came to see? "

Come again ? Does it MATTER ?

" Canisius still made a lot of dough, right? "

Did they ? How much ? How much do ya think Syracuse made KNOWING ahead of time that their fans would draw 90% of the gate ?

" If 15,000 will come for Canisius imagine how many would want to see four starters from the same high school? Maybe for the first time in 40 years there would be scalpers for college ball in WNY. What’s not to like? "

15,000 DIDN'T come for Canisius - 14,000 came to see their beloved big-time Big East Syracuse team !

That's my story and I stick'n to it.

It's also what I believe. My guess is that Burkie and Blaise think somewhat like that as well. Doesn't mean we're right, just means that's how we think.

If you think you'll lose before the contest is even scheduled well, then yes, I guess you will.

I also think JAM and few others can out-coach Boheim on a regular basis.

You don’t think SU would go home and home (HSBC) with NU given the four starters are from NFHS? Stanford traveled to Siena last year when they had one player from the lower Hudson Valley. Coaches play home games for their players all of the time and Duke wanted to play NU when Laetner was there. The proposal was 3-1 and Jack, I believe, held out for 2-1.

It's all about attitude.

To those that are convinced that NU would lose to Syracuse by 40 pts , using the Sagarin rating system to calculate point spreads , had NU played Syracuse at the end of the past season Syracuse (home ) would have been a 10 1/2 point favorite.....if the game is played at HSBC , Syracuse is no more than a 6 or 7 pt favorite. Obviously the oddsmakers have more faith in NU than some on this board.

The possibility of losing by 40 comes from the style of play ( run/gun/no defense ) rather than the talent of the players.

DD, this is an illustration of how an "up" schedule can impact recruiting. From the Siena board: "Cantino gave CAA Insider a long and varied list of Rhode Island, Kansas State, Providence, Louisville, Baylor, Seton Hall, Temple, Nebraska, Kentucky, Siena and Rider."

I simply do not understand what you are trying to accomplishing by going back and forth about scheduling. What is it you hope to gain by this lifelong commitment? I will never understand you and why you persist, as if we are responsible for your dilemma.

And again I ask, who are the four starters? You mentioned them 3-4 times.

DD posed the question re SU and I was responding. You're right, though, I am adamant about seeing Niagara grow and my first interest is academics, far more than athletics. I just happen to think a good athletic program is also a sound academic investment. That’s what I have seen so that is what I believe.

RE the 4 players, I am corrected. It would be 3. I incorrectly included Bilal Benn as a NFHS grad...mea culpa.

Purp, following NU I went on to two grad schools that are completely different and rated higher than NU. One was an Ivy League school that is rated much, much higher.

Know what? The brightest students I was ever around were at NU. That's right, little old NU. McNally, McCarthy, Crawford, Olpaka, Roberti and dozens of others. As bright as they come and would have been at the top of the class at any university.

I have recently read old copies of the Index, back in the 20's & 30's, and once again, the articles were all written very well and with great thought---it really was a gift to read them. I also recently read the notes posted on the Alumni site re Scot Stewart. I didn't know him well but was once again the missives were very impressive in terms of content, emotion and insightfulness. So, from what I have seen, I know the fellas back in the 20’s & 30’s were clearly bright and gifted. My contemporaries were all very bright and now I see the same with Scott’s classmates. So, in the end, nothing has changed over the years…the quality is there, the fine educational asset is well and thriving….

So, to return to your question, I believe Niagara is a largely unrecognized gem that is well hidden. All that is needed is a little illumination, a little polishing here and there. If this can be done I believe Niagara’s reputation can grow geometrically in all areas and in congress with the sentiments of those men that penned those fine essays in the Index way back when. I am not suggesting to double in size or anything like that, just suggesting that many of the challenges Niagara now faces (and all other schools as well) could be made easier and in doing so the academic endowment, as well as the financial endowment, would grow and endure. My thoughts are that sports, all sports, but basketball and hockey especially, can play a special role in this growth, thus my desire to push for a schedule that will ramify to its full extent throughout all aspects of the University operations. I would just like to see Niagara grow to become all she is capable of, and that will be fine with me. That’s it; there is nothing more and I am just one of many alumni trying to make a meaningful and lasting contribution.

Since I've never posted on this board before I may have replied in the wrong area, so here we go again.

To PURP 1,

As an alumni of a men's soccer program I am a supporter of all the Niagara sports programs and attend many Basketball and hockey games throughout the year. As the years have gone by I have enjoyed reading this board to keep up with what people are saying about Niagara Sports, but have noticed on many occasions that when ever someone questions the basketball schedule you use the men’s soccer schedule as an opposing point.

Just to set the record straight, here is an out-line of the last 2 years of the men' soccer schedule. I understand that you only pay attention to basketball, but please keep in mind that many institutions excel in many different sports - therefore, just because it is not a big basketball name does not mean that it is not a "big" name on the soccer scene.

2006
Out of Conference
Syracuse – Big East Team
Cal Sate Irvine - #17 in the Nation when NU played them
Santa Clara - # 4 in the Nation when NU played them – made the Elite 8 that year
Duquesne – Top 25 in the Nation in 2004 and 2005
Bucknell – 2006 - Won the Patriot League and into the NCAA tournament
Robert Morris – 2005 Won the NEC, Played in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Buffalo – Ranked as high as #18 in the Nation
In Conference
Fairfield – as high as #15 in the Nation. Beat U-Conn in the first round of the NCAA tournament

2007
Out of Conference
Stony Brook – 2005 NCAA Tournament 2nd round. Beat Yale in 1st round.
(Return games)
Duquesne – Top 25 in the Nation in 2004 and 2005
Bucknell – 2006 - Won the Patriot League and played in the NCAA tournament
Robert Morris – 2005 Won the NEC, Played in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

In Conference
Loyola – Defeated Liberty in NCAA 1st round, losing to Maryland in 2nd
St. Peters – Earned an at large bid to the NCAA tournament
Fairfield – Ranked in the top 20 most of the year.

and since you brought up Oakland and Florida Atlantic:

2008
Oakland – Won the summit League. Defeated Michigan State in NCAA first round, and lost to #10 Notre Dame in 2nd round NCAA tournament
Florida Atlantic – Lost in the Atlantic Soccer Conference final in 2006. Won the ASC in 2007.

As you can see, the men's soccer team plays many elite soccer programs - so please don't use them as a comparison to scheduling down in the future!

Thanks

More than half of those schools you played AFTER they made history. The MAAC you can't avoid.

Of course you do realize that most scheduling is done 1 -2 years in advance?

Regardless, the main point I was trying to make is that you seem to use the men’s soccer team as an argument that other NU teams are not scheduling tough opponents. I think that even you can see that the opponents that the men’s soccer team is playing are fairly legitimate considering the post season appearances and rankings of their opponents??

Hey Soccer Guy, great schedule and I do follow soccer, not too closely, but it is nice to see the team playing better. The new turf has to be a big plus.

NU had a great soccer team way back and played everyone, and won. In fact, the coach (Joe?) was too successful and Layden canned him. The coach was inducted into the HOF last year.
