In reply to: CC 's message, "Re: I'm speechless CC" on Tuesday, July 15, 11:05:33pm

Since I've never posted on this board before I may have replied in the wrong area, so here we go again.

To PURP 1,

As an alumni of a men's soccer program I am a supporter of all the Niagara sports programs and attend many Basketball and hockey games throughout the year. As the years have gone by I have enjoyed reading this board to keep up with what people are saying about Niagara Sports, but have noticed on many occasions that when ever someone questions the basketball schedule you use the men’s soccer schedule as an opposing point.

Just to set the record straight, here is an out-line of the last 2 years of the men' soccer schedule. I understand that you only pay attention to basketball, but please keep in mind that many institutions excel in many different sports - therefore, just because it is not a big basketball name does not mean that it is not a "big" name on the soccer scene.

2006
Out of Conference
Syracuse – Big East Team
Cal Sate Irvine - #17 in the Nation when NU played them
Santa Clara - # 4 in the Nation when NU played them – made the Elite 8 that year
Duquesne – Top 25 in the Nation in 2004 and 2005
Bucknell – 2006 - Won the Patriot League and into the NCAA tournament
Robert Morris – 2005 Won the NEC, Played in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Buffalo – Ranked as high as #18 in the Nation
In Conference
Fairfield – as high as #15 in the Nation. Beat U-Conn in the first round of the NCAA tournament

2007
Out of Conference
Stony Brook – 2005 NCAA Tournament 2nd round. Beat Yale in 1st round.
(Return games)
Duquesne – Top 25 in the Nation in 2004 and 2005
Bucknell – 2006 - Won the Patriot League and played in the NCAA tournament
Robert Morris – 2005 Won the NEC, Played in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

In Conference
Loyola – Defeated Liberty in NCAA 1st round, losing to Maryland in 2nd
St. Peters – Earned an at large bid to the NCAA tournament
Fairfield – Ranked in the top 20 most of the year.

and since you brought up Oakland and Florida Atlantic:

2008
Oakland – Won the summit League. Defeated Michigan State in NCAA first round, and lost to #10 Notre Dame in 2nd round NCAA tournament
Florida Atlantic – Lost in the Atlantic Soccer Conference final in 2006. Won the ASC in 2007.

As you can see, the men's soccer team plays many elite soccer programs - so please don't use them as a comparison to scheduling down in the future!

Thanks

More than half of those schools you played AFTER they made history. The MAAC you can't avoid.

Of course you do realize that most scheduling is done 1 -2 years in advance?

Regardless, the main point I was trying to make is that you seem to use the men’s soccer team as an argument that other NU teams are not scheduling tough opponents. I think that even you can see that the opponents that the men’s soccer team is playing are fairly legitimate considering the post season appearances and rankings of their opponents??

Hey Soccer Guy, great schedule and I do follow soccer, not too closely, but it is nice to see the team playing better. The new turf has to be a big plus.

NU had a great soccer team way back and played everyone, and won. In fact, the coach (Joe?) was too successful and Layden canned him. The coach was inducted into the HOF last year.
