In reply to: Maldez 's message, "Re: Steven Levnaic" on Sunday, May 01, 04:28:28pm

From the start, Paulus has preached a culture of family, loyalty, and winning. With the exception of Solomon, who left because of an argument with Smothers, who, too, has since left, all of these players were told to leave the program. They did not go voluntarily into the portal seeking something better. Levnaic, in particular, was told he could only be on the team as a walk-on. Even though he had been a loyal teammate and scholarship player for four years, and with two open scholarships, he was sent packing. Kuakamensah and Roberts, who stayed and helped the team win, almost had their jerseys and other memorabilia knowingly thrown out by the DOBO the morning after Senior Night. So much for how you treat your alums. If there is a sense of loyalty and family, it does not appear to go both ways.

Paulus is entering his fourth year on the job and has the vast majority of his wins the credit of Casey recruits. He has only one recruit from high/prep school who has stayed in the program, Traore. At this point, next year's team will be composed of Traore, a D-1 transfer (Iorio), a D-2 transfer (Gray), four JUCO transfers, and four freshman. These 11 players have a total of 178 games of experience at the D-1 level (Iorio, 110 games; Thomasson, 30 games; Traore, 28 games).

Paulus has been equally successful in filling his coaching staff. Ervin, his top recruiter and bigs' coach, is gone. Smothers, who was deeply unhappy, left as well, but only after chasing Solomon out. Kelley, the DOBO, treats the players like Kuakamensah and Roberts poorly. And then there is Devitt. He never even played high school basketball. Can you think of any collegiate sport (at any level, no less D-1) in which there is an assistant coach who has never played the sport at any level beyond middle school? Football? Volleyball? Baseball? Swimming? No. Overall, not a stellar cast, and one unlikely to develop talent like Traore and Harlan Obioha (recruited by Ervin, by the way). Thus far, Devitt has brought in no one. Kelley played in high school. Antone Gray played D-3. Paulus, of course, played at the highest level, but as head coach cannot also shoulder player development, especially for bigs.

Reliance on the JUCO and transfer markets may be a winning way--and there is nothing wrong with that--but will not build a culture of loyalty and family. It's simply a short-term rental market. With eight new players coming in, that's a lot of promises. The same type of promises that were made to get Rob Brown, Julian Mackey, and Tajhae Hill to come. And now leave. The story of the transfer portal is as much about broken promises as it is about irrational expectations.

Wow, what a bombshell of a post. I know you'll never tell us how you know all this but I'm speculating you are a team manager or something similar. All the players who entered the portal were told to leave the program? That's a tough one to swallow but I'm going to take your word for it because your post has a ring of truth to it. This sheds a whole new light on Greg Paulus and what type of coach he is. My only speculation is he felt he couldn't win with the players he had on the roster and decided to hit the re-set button on the team and bring in a whole new crew. Let's see how that works out for him.

I don't think this is the exception anymore. You're just finding out that the portal is used both ways.

The kids play hard for Paulus. If the internal culture were as fractured as you suggest, then it would translate onto the court. But it hasn't. Effort is an important component of a basketball program. The NU kids seem to play hard for Paulus.

Still, the jury is out. To be a successful as a head coach, Paulus needs to win more games. The transfer portal has sent all 300+ D1 programs into a spin cycle that will require a few recruiting/transfer cycles to sort itself out.
In the meantime, it would help to establish continuity within the program by keeping a few players onboard for 2-3 years within this new NIL/transfer environment. Of course, every school would like to be able to do that. A few will. Most won't. Paulus has what appears to be a nice group of freshmen coming in. Hopefully they will bond and form a solid nucleus together. That's all you can hope for.

If not there's always the Portal.

This sure sounds like sour grapes from someone with an ax to grind. Paulis had the team playing well at the end of the yeaar. Player turnover is the way of Division 1 basketball. If you have success someone is going to take your players. With the players leaving where did they end up? Did they put the work in or were they just going along for the ride. There is always two sides to every story. Everything I have seen with Paulis and staff has been above board and they have been honest with the players. I am happy he is here and I think he has us headed in the right direction.

Nope, I'm gonna go with Informed and believe he was speaking the truth when he said Paulus essentially fired 6 players. His post had too many details to be just made up.

It's something scholarship athletes better get used to. Scholarships are technically renewable every year. Most scholarships are and have always been honored for 4 years on a path to graduation, but you can make a legitimate argument that those good faith agreements will be re-evaluated with the arrival of NIL and the transfer portal.

The athletes have new bargaining power now. They certainly have lots of freedom. If coaches, especially coaches like Paulus at the non-Power 5/6 levels, have to worry about all 13 of their guys looking for better opportunities at the end of every season, then the coaches are going to start looking at optimizing their roster. Annually. And I can't say I blame them.

I agree...if players are going to exploit the portal, so will coaches.
