I believe Eagle is misinformed on the causal relationship between enrollment and success in athletics. A team like Niagara would have to MAINTAIN a high level of success to get any lasting possible bump in enrollment. That means not getting to the dance once or twice, but getting into it almost routinely, and then being recognized more and more from winning in the tournament. Not winning the tournament but winning two or more games more often that SPC did and will do in the future. If you believe that enrollment jumps from a successful basketball program, how much winning do you expect them to accomplish before they experience a jump?
Niagara can win here and there and feel good about it.That said, they don't have the resources to ride the wave long enough and far enough to experience any lasting growing national exposure and thus more looks by prospective students. Florida Gulf Coast got some attention for their past efforts, but they haven't been able to maintain. And that's a public school with about 15,000 students. A small school without money to burn at the expense of their other sport programs means that Eagle has to keep dreaming because that's as close as they will ever come to meeting those expectations.
Why didn't Siena at least upgrade their conference from all those wins? Because Fran McCaffrey was the reason and not the effort from the Siena administration.
