Just received the Eagle publication in the mail yesterday.

Had some interesting and informative articles, of course the $10 million gift was highlighted as it should be.

So tell me, is it just the time of year (mid summer) or is athletics no longer considered a viable part of the university. With the exception of an ad placed by Caragroup, I could find no mention of athletics.

Many of you I'm sure remember the days a sports publication was issued to key parties highlighting basketball, was done very professionally.

Today there is nothing... oh well maybe this fall or is this more evidence of a lack of administrative support. You would think the athletic dept could submit articles.

'Gone forever" is a bit extreme.

Well without being able to tout success in athletes either on the court or on the field, the school points to academic success and all the money Gray apparently collected, I assume so they will be able to renovate the locker rooms for the 6th time and make sure that Joe Mihalich's name is forever remembered by naming the hall or some offices after him. Of course, you would ask yourself why NU waited so long to honor him in ANY way, and unfortunately didn't so so until after the man had a stroke and struggled to communicate. They did the same thing to Larry Costello, only waited about 45 years to do so.

According to NU's so called HOF fame guidelines, five years is supposed to have passed until one becomes eligible. And of course they put trainers, physical therapists, doctore and every one else they wanted in the HOF. It should have been preserved for athletes in all sports and coaches only, but I digress. So NU can change the rules to include whoever they want to.

So 5 years pass and where is Joe Mihalich's induction ceremony? Somewhere in the clouds I assume. It's not until three more years pass and Joe suffers a stroke that they put a plaque up and decide to put him in the Hall of Fame. Not 5 years, but 8 years and a stroke later.

Simon Gray was here when Joe passed his 5th year of eligibility. My only question is what the fuck were you doing besides attending loss after loss on the court while Joe Mihalich's eligibility came and went.....until he had a stroke. Then NU made him the man of the hour, day and weekend.

He was coach at Hofstra. How many universities put active head coaches in that left their program for another one? Show me one and I guess you'd be right.

Oh I figured it out. So you are saying that he abandoned NU for Hofstra with out regard for the extra $200,000 per year he was offered? I see. With that then, why did they put him in at all?

I anticipate your reply....

Hofstra is the school that made Joe's career worth all the effort he gave in his lifetime to it. JAM never wanted Hofstra money to stay at NU. He was entitled to a decent raise to seal the career for him but you got about ten years of snooze ball in it's place. Enjoy!

Pretend you know what I will say. I would never blame JAM for leaving Niagara to go to Hofstra. I wish Niagara would have figured out a way to make him a lifer there. I am a JAM supporter and have followed his teams since he left. From a Niagara POV, I can see why they didn't bring him back until they did. Not because of the health, but because that's when he stopped coaching. How do you bring him back during the season for the HOF when he is coaching during the season? Niagara does a lot wrong, but I wouldn't put that one on them.

It's the same school that waited until Larry Costello was dead before they honored him.

Yeah, what a joke and a sad one at that. JAM deserves so much better.

Over the years I have see a ton of NU basketball, however I was too young to remember much about I saw with some of the greatest teams in NU history, mainly in the 1950's.

But I have spoken to a few people not too many years ago that had seen more than I had, and said that from what they can remember and going beyond the 50's, Joe Mihalich recruited man for man, the greatest athletes to play basketball for NU. The talent level, the physical abilities and the speed were things he could never remember being matched by any team collectively. He said that NU teams under JAM actually got better and more able as a game wore on and against many times, NU just worked their opponents completely out of fuel.

I was always wowed by their speed and through the years NU has had no superior fireplug players here and there. But never so many in 15 years as JAM discovered.

I meant to say that through the years, NU has often had one superior player, but never so many as JAM had discovered.

They were great athletes. JAM knew what he was doing and did it all oh so well. He continued that at Hofstra where he turned that program around using the same formulas.
