Good.

NU has a lot to offer and in many instances, much more than larger schools.

In addition, it is hard to imagine a high school coach or parent not liking JAM from the get-go.

Good to know Joe might still land that elusive front-court player over the summer.

le, it's meant to mean that next summer he has to do well because at the end of that next season, those guys will be gone. They will all be here next season except for Kamau and Demitrius.

It's planning ahead for the swan song of those guys after next year is gone.

So, 1 opening for Sept. '08, two (or three if the current opening is not filled) for next Sept ('09) and four for '10, right?

Area Players Mulling Options, Finalizing College Plans

With the five-week spring signing period set to begin Wednesday, several area players in yesterday's Capital Classic games said they are beginning to decide on colleges.

Bethesda-Chevy Chase All-Met guard Austin Cooley, who took an official visit to Mount St. Mary's last month, said the Mountaineers filled that scholarship slot with another player. Cooley said he also has an offer from Loyola, and has spoken with coaches at Penn State and Niagara, though neither has offered yet.

IAN HUMMER
Growth Is Clear, if Not Measurable, for Gonzaga's Hummer

By Josh Barr
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, July 20, 2007; Page E03

Ian Hummer figures he has grown a few inches in the two years since he began high school. Exactly how tall Gonzaga's rising junior center might be, however, is unknown. For while height might be the most basic of statistics for a basketball player, Hummer won't go anywhere near a tape measure, guessing he is "6 [feet] 5 or 6-6."

"When I get home, my dad always wants to measure me, but I always say no," said Hummer, whose father, Ed, played on Princeton's 1965 Final Four team that featured Bill Bradley. "I don't want to measure myself because I don't want to jinx" any potential growth.

Whatever the exact measurement is, Hummer continues to develop on the basketball court. He joined Gonzaga's starting lineup for the final two months of last season and figures to be a major contributor this coming winter. Last night, he scored a game-high 16 points as the Eagles defeated Eleanor Roosevelt, 69-47, in The Rock summer league's championship game at High Point.

"He's very skilled and knows how to play the game," Gonzaga Coach Steve Turner said. "He's a player with a great basketball IQ. For him, that runs in the family."

Even as he continues to makes plays, it might be easy to overlook Hummer on Gonzaga's talented roster. One teammate, forward Cameron Johnson, already has accepted a scholarship offer to play football for the University of Virginia. Forward Max Kenyi holds more than 20 scholarship offers to play college basketball.

Guard Tyler Thornton, a rising sophomore, is considered one of the area's best players in his class. Another sophomore guard, Cedrick Lindsay, made three three-pointers in a two-minute stretch of the first half to help put the game out of reach. Lindsay finished with 14 points, Thornton had 11.

Then there is Hummer, who just seems to do everything well -- spotting open teammates, getting to rebounds and scoring from the perimeter and on the inside.

Hummer hopes he grows to be at least 6-8. If that happens, Turner said, Hummer could go from being a mid-level recruit -- Loyola, Niagara and James Madison already have offered him scholarships and Ivy League teams are very interested -- to a top-tier prospect.

"He's a very versatile player," Turner said. "He can beat you a lot of different ways. Sometimes it doesn't show up in the statistics."

Gonzaga 69, E. Roosevelt 47 Summertime Champs: Gonzaga is trying for its second undefeated summer in six years. The Eagles went 32-0 in 2002 and then went on to win the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference and City Title championships. Up Next: Gonzaga plays DeMatha in its Kenner League regular season finale on Saturday at 1 at Georgetown's McDonough Gymnasium, though both teams could be missing key players as several travel-team tournaments take place in Las Vegas.

Last I heard Rashon Tabb is going to attend Central Florida Community College in Ocala, FL because he did not qualify for Division 1 due to grades.

I am sure that we will keep an eye on him but Ive also heard he wants to go as "high" as he can get...meaning if he sits the bench at a school like UConn over playing at a school like NU thats ok.

Playing at CFCC will increase his exposure to schools outside the Northeast.

We should also keep our eyes on the Agee kid at NFHS...think he is a going to be senior?

What about 6’7” Eric Spanbauer of NFHS? His grandfather, Squeaky Spanbauer, was a great Niagara player in the 50's, I believe. Is Eric in the same league as his g\Grand Dad?

Spanbauer isnt a D1 prospect. I think graduated this year--would make a great invited walkon...smart player w/ good size.

I think he is probably going to a D3--where he will probably be a solid contributor.

I think his dad works on campus, so NU couldve invited him to walk on and he wouldnt have had to pay (parent being employee of University). My guess is he probably wants to go and actually get some PT somewhere.

I wouldn't give up on these kids.

This Ian Hummer kid sounds like a really sound player and worth the chance. IF he grows a few more inches, we've got a true steal. He comes from Gonzaga, where we've had some strong recruiting ties I thought.

It will be tough balancing the numbers if JAM brings in another frosh or 2, but hey you've gotta do what you gotta do.

We have 4 frosh: Cooley, K Edwards(red-shirted) Williams and the flying Dutchman, we could add 2 more(?)

We will also have 5 juniors, 1 Sr in Benson, and 1 Soph w/ anthony nelson. We can wish for balance all we want, but if we can sign a player or 2 now, fine. If we get another good sized frosh, the Dutch kid will be red-shirted.
