To all of you who didn't play a Division 1 sport in college, I ask you the following....what would you do if you were Mr Ben Dover, a better than average second baseman.

Here's the deal Mr Dover

We will pay for all your educational expenses, provide a place for you to live, give you all you want to eat for three meals a day, allow you to wear the schools colors on clothing that no else can get their hands on, transport you all over the East Coast and Florida to play your favorite game, but we ask you for the following:

Play as hard as you can for us, make sure you keep up with your studies and be willing to spend a few weekends raising some cash with your teamates at the Bills games. We also ask that if requested, you do a small bit of volunteer work visiting somebody who might be disadvantaged like perhaps in a nursing home.

If you are willing to do that, we will keep up our end of the bargain.

How many of us might think that would be a good deal if we were D1 athletes?

truthful, tell me the troubles and tribulations of someone who is in this situation.

I think you forget how others go through life on their own dime all the way to the grave.

the scenario is this:

you're going to get a ridiculously expensive education from a good school. you'll get clothing and books. you'll get a chance to possibly play on national tv and win the praise of your peers and the college's fans and alumni.

all we ask is that you play your hardest. don't say anything negative about the coach, school, etc. you can be social, but if you are caught doing anything embarrassing you will be all over the newspapers, blogs, etc. you will have great fans at home games if you're playing hard and doing well. on the road, it's a different story. fans will research you, and make fun of anything they can get a hold of. also, we're going to take 20 hours of your week away for practice, which does not include some "optional" workouts/practices. by the way, you'll also have to deal with the pressure of winning from alumni and fans. oh and at least stay eligible academically despite missing at least 3 classes in every course you'll ever take. and oh ya, every year, we're looking for recruits that are better than you to take your spot now or in the future so be ready to compete. you might want to consider transfering if someone younger eclipses you.

it's great to be a d1 athlete, but not THAT great.

I'm sure there would be a depth chart somewhere that might give you sour grapes, but I have witnessed NU make sure that kids graduate that they easily could have sent on their way.

By the way, as for all your other complaints on how hard it is to be a college scholarship player, my answer is for you to realize that as such, you are representing the school and your conduct should actually follow that path, at least with respect to the school. That's what you are saying "yes" to. Free education, food and lodging along with being a member of a team.

If you think that would be too much to bear for over 100K in education, I wish I was younger and had your talent because I would try like hell to get one of those seats on the bench. A sport last for four years. A free college diploma lasts forever and might even make sure your kids go the same route (at least to college).

Pretty good bang for the buck if you ask me.

Nobody forces anyone to sigh the LOI.

I'm saying, I would take getting an academic scholarship over an athletic one.

The commitment college athletes make is absolutely incredible, and you shouldn't so easily dismiss it.

You have to balance on the field/court/ice success with academics, and that's not to mention giving up all the great, crazy experiences most college kids graduate with.

Purp 1,

What you fail to realize is that every other sport at NU other than basketball and Hockey (and not all hockey players) does not give out 'full rides". The majority of the other student athletes at NU have a partial scholarship or NO scholarship at all. Most of the sports have a limit/cap on the schlarship amount they can give each individual athlete. Basketball has full ride "practice players", when the other sports best players are on very little scholarship money - if any.

These quality student athletes should be applauded by someone like you - who claims to bleed purple and white - not degraded and put down. I thought that our fans would support all our teams, and wish them every success possible. unfortunately in your case it would appear that you cannot see past the basketball program - what a shame for you.

When you say that these student athletes from the 'Olympic sports' should be glad to to work every event that comes along to supplement there free education - PLEASE remember that they are not receiving a FREE education. They are actually working these events to fundraise enough money to pay for uniforms, training gear and the basic equipment involved to function as a team.

Please try to be a little more informed when talking about any sport other than basketball, because if you don't you just look like a bigger jackass than normal.

Like I said, nobody forces anyone to sign a LOI. That is strictly voluntary on your part.

If how would you like to be required to do nothing at all and go to school for free? That's called paying for it yourself.

I am not being condescending to the sports programs that don't get the full rides or the perks, for I am NOT talking in reference to them.

I did more community service for NU than your whole team did while I was at NU and I paid 100% for everything I got from Niagara. I worked 20 hours a week for nothing as a volunteer and never once did I view it as a burden but I also worked 30 hours per week at a job to pay for rent, school and food.

I don't know what I would have given up to play college sports, but given the chance I would have given it a shot.

Don't feel persecuted as a student/athlete. Life could have been much worse, believe me.

the difference was you still got to have a social life (get drunk, do some stupid stuff, etc) and didn't have a bunch of people in the media and on the internet constantly reporting and second-guessing your work.

You know, in days gone by old Babe Ruth would get hammered before/after he pitched and everyone knew it. So did many others in college sports as well. Nobody cared. It would be covered up.

Now the stakes are higher. First off, drinking under 21 is illegal. If you do when your team says no, and you agreed to that, then you have to live by your decisions. Yes, you will be judged by a higher standard, and that's because some little impressionable girl or boy might look to you as a hero in some way and I know it's a lot to ask, but then again people who excell as D1 athletes are unique and rare to begin with. Is it too much to ask that they take their position seriously? That's why the signature on the form is for your name and not somebody elses.

Well said.....the other programs do NOT provide full rides. Many of the so called " athletic scholarships " provide partial aid , which is fine . The point being ignored is that most student athletes don't mind making sacrifices to help their programs fund road road trips, uniforms and equipment . It seems as though sacrifices are not being asked of all the athletic programs.

It's disgraceful for the basketball program ( JAM ) to avoid money games ( 2) like the plague when that revenue could be so beneficial to all of the athletic programs , basketball included.

In these difficult economic times, it's incomprehensible how an AD can sit back and allow potential revenue to go by the wayside for fear of incurring a meaningless loss.

Where is the sacrifice on the part of men's basketball ???

Life isn't fair sometimes, but if you are a fan of religion, perhaps the meek shall inherit the earth. It's never been about what you do when somebody is looking truthful, it's about what you do that nobody sees.

That's true sacrifice.
