Subject: Please help - need Advise

I adopted a neo-mastiff when he was six years old. He is currently fifteen weeks old. The only problem I'm having is he occasionally freaks out for 5-10 seconds, biting and snatching for no reason (if I pulled him down on his leash to lay on the floor). I have him in training right now.
Since we adopted him, I found out that the mother ate two of her six litter. Could my mastiff be a bad breed?
He has been neutered and his shots are up to date.
I love my dog but don't want him to hurt my family.
