Dear Phyllis, Having had a home filled with cats at one time, I think that I might be able to explain a few things that might help you. First, Whitney acted very normal for being an only cat. Hissing and scratching are things cats do to establish territory and tell the 'invading' cat this is MY HOME.

Can't believe you returned the first cat the same day, I've brought absolutely WILD cats into my house of then two large males and two females, this cat was a Siamese, vicious to the core, and there were a couple of very tense moments, but the resident cats put the other in place without hurting anyone. LOTS of hissing, and some hitting, but this is an animal coming in that hated everyone, had been hit by a car, lost her litter of kittens and did not trust humans.

She would walk at the edges of each room, we would just ignore her till she wanted to get closer, her food and water were set out where she could get to them without contact with the others, everyone respected everyone. Slowly this cat turned around and by the next summer all lived together without those warnings, but they did not cuddle etc.

The others in the family, like one of the females and one of the males, joined full grown and as left behind cats, there was an adjustment period with each of them too, no one just LOVES the new cat but YOU, they have to grow to love her, she/he has to learn his place in the family, just like with dogs having a alpha dog, cats have an order and it's through this hissing and sometimes scratching that it takes place.

The one thing you should never do is adopt a cat with no claw unless Whitney has no claws, each would be at a loss to defend themselves if one cat had claws and one did not. Also if you try to adopt another kitten be there when the two cats are together, if you have to go out, put one in one room one in another till the getting use to each other period is past.

Why did you want to get another cat? Sounds like Whitney enjoys being an only cat. Do think it out before you try again, you might be meant to have just one kitty. Hugs, Anna May
