I'm with you, Ketch. It's pretty clear that Plato's use of the tale of Atlantis is heuristic, and purely fictive. Just read Plato's original writings at http://classics.mit.edu/Plato/timaeus.html and http://classics.mit.edu/Plato/critias.html. (Seekers of the "actual" Atlantis may as well go look for the location of the "actual" allegorical cave.)

It's worth noting that Plato's is the only reference to Atlantis known in the thousands of years of recorded Greek history - despite the fact that the story describes what would have been widely recounted historical battles between Athenians and Atlanteans.
