When one’s guru is far away or should pass away before the student has received the full course of Kriya techniques the student is free to go to another acharya for more Kriya instruction. This does not in any way interfere with the guru-chela relationship. There are many, many cases of this in India. It is the correct system, which was set up by Lahiri Mahasaya himself.

There is a big difference. Yogananda was teaching in an environment where his followers were not in contact with any other Kriya lineages, and did not know who was genuine or not. Lahiri Mahasaya's instructions (if indeed those were his instructions) applied to people learning Kriya in a very different environment, where they would be in a position to make an informed judgement of where to learn Kriya.

In short, few of Yogananda's followers would be able to find someone of the stature of Sri Bhupendra Nath Sanyal to take initiation from.
